Connected Field Service: Turning Sensor Noise Into Work Orders, Carefully

This is the part that turns Field Service from reactive break-fix into something that looks proactive on a slide. It’s also the part most likely to generate a flood of nonsense work orders if you configure it haphazardly, which I have absolutely seen during my days. I’m not going to delve too deeply into this, but give you a taste of options, what ā€œcouldā€ happen, and what you want to be avoid.

Two Ways In Based On Who Holds the Azure Bill

Azure IoT Central integration is the low-code path. It’s a managed SaaS offering where admins configure rules and actions without writing infrastructure code, and IoT alerts flow into Connected Field Service based on device abnormalities. This option is good for organizations that want value fast and don’t have a dedicated IoT engineering team.

Azure IoT Hub integration is the platform-as-a-service path. Everything runs in your own Azure subscription using Microsoft’s enterprise template as a starting point that you customize per service. It involves more control, more responsibility, and more line items on your Azure invoice. This is the route for organizations with existing IoT infrastructure or specific compliance requirements that a managed SaaS layer can’t satisfy.

Either way, the mechanism is the same at a conceptual level: A device reports abnormal telemetry, an alert record gets created in Dynamics, and rules you define determine whether that alert becomes a case, a work order, or just a log entry nobody looks at until an audit.

IoT Alert Fatigue: The Part Nobody Warned You About

A sensor that’s a little too sensitive will happily generate a hundred alerts a day. If your automation is set to auto-create a work order per alert, congratulations, you’ve built a machine that schedules a truck roll every time a thermostat has an opinion. I’ve lived this one.

Tune thresholds before you turn on automatic work order creation, not after your dispatchers start ignoring the queue entirely because it’s 90 percent noise. An alert system nobody trusts is worse than no alert system because it gives you false confidence that something is being monitored when really, everyone stopped reading it months ago.

Predictive maintenance is genuinely valuable when the signal to noise ratio is right. It’s genuinely annoying when it isn’t. There is no in-between, and I’ve worked both versions.
