Asset BOMs in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management

Asset Bills of Materials (Asset BOMs) serve as vital tools for tracking materials linked with particular assets. They are instrumental in enhancing efficiency for technicians and assisting managers in inventory control. Familiarizing yourself with how Asset Management functions in relation to Asset BOMs within Microsoft D365 is crucial. This guide will cover the following aspects:

Setting Up Spare Parts Item Groups:

  1. In Asset Management: Navigate to Setup > Asset > Spare parts item groups.
  2. Create a New Item Group: Click on New and select the group. The group’s name will automatically populate the Name field.

Viewing and Updating Asset BOMs:

  1. Access the Asset BOM Page: Go to Asset management > Assets > Active assets. Select the asset in the list and choose Asset BOM.
  2. Update Asset BOM: Click on Update asset BOM, and add any necessary assets, asset types, or resources. Click OK to start the update. Alternatively, set up the Update function as a batch job.
  3. Add Inventory Dimensions: Go to Inventory > Dimensions display, and select the checkboxes for the dimensions you want to see. Save this setup with the Save setup option set to Yes.
  4. Overview of Items: To see where the item is used, select Item where used.
  5. View Active or All Item Lines: Select View > Current for active items or View > All to see all item lines.

Creating a New Item Line in an Asset BOM:

  1. On the Asset BOM Page: Click New.
  2. Select Asset: Choose the asset to add a line for.
  3. Line Number: Input a sequential line number.
  4. Effective and Expiration Fields: Enter the start date and end date (if applicable).
  5. Item Number Field: Select the item, and the Product name field will auto-fill.
  6. Quantity and Unit: Enter the quantity, and the Unit field will update automatically.

Other Notable Features:

  • Monitoring After Maintenance: Track consumption of spare parts and other items used on the asset after maintenance is completed.
  • Automatic Updating: Configure Asset BOMs to update automatically based on specific work order lifecycle states.
  • Manual Updating: Manually add new item lines on the Asset BOM page.
  • Tracking Spare Parts History: Use the Asset BOM page to track history after registering item consumption on a work order.
