Overview of Distributed Order Management in Dynamics 365 F/SCM

Distributed Order Management (DOM) within Dynamics 365 F/SCM is an advanced module designed to automate and streamline how orders are routed across a business’s entire supply chain. Leveraging the capabilities of both Commerce and Supply Chain Management (SCM), DOM uses sophisticated algorithms, including mixed integer programming and rule-based logic, to select the ideal fulfillment source for each order. This selection process considers critical factors such as cost, delivery speed, inventory status, and service-level promises to ensure efficient and cost-effective order fulfillment.

A key strength of DOM is its adaptability to omnichannel environments; orders originating from any sales channel, whether online storefronts, physical locations, or call centers, are fulfilled from the best available source within the network. This flexibility helps businesses implement customized fulfillment strategies suitable for modern commerce.

Advantages of Using Distributed Order Management

  • Optimized fulfillment: Orders are shipped from the most strategic sources, which helps minimize operational costs, speed up deliveries, and maintain healthy inventory levels.
  • Minimized errors and delays: Automation significantly reduces manual steps in order processing, leading to fewer mistakes and bottlenecks.
  • Live order monitoring: DOM provides real-time updates on order status and shipping progress, enhancing transparency and customer communication.
  • Resilience in the supply chain: Configurable rules empower businesses to quickly respond to unexpected changes, like supply disruptions or inventory shortages.

Positive Business Impact

  • Lower delivery costs: Orders are often routed to the closest or most cost-effective facility, reducing shipping expenses and time.
  • Better inventory management: Slow-moving stock is prioritized for fulfillment, leading to reduced overhead and markdowns.
  • Scalability: The system can easily accommodate new locations and sales channels without sacrificing efficiency.
  • Customer Satisfaction: Intelligent split shipments, partial order fills, and swift out-of-stock responses help meet customer delivery expectations reliably.

DOM’s engine uses mixed integer programming to evaluate fulfillment options, ensuring products are shipped in the right quantity, at the right time, and from the right location. This results in improved profitability and reduced costs.

Integration with D365 Products

DOM works in tandem with various Microsoft Dynamics solutions:

  • Commerce: Main interface for orchestrating omnichannel orders, POS, and online transactions
  • Supply Chain Management: Supplies warehouse, logistics, and inventory data for optimal routing
  • Intelligent Order Management: Uses machine learning and analytics for smart, adaptive fulfillment
  • Dataverse: Provides real-time, network-wide inventory visibility
  • Power Platform: Enables workflow automation, reporting, and compliance management, and connects to external platforms via APIs and connectors

Licensing Information

To access DOM features, appropriate licenses must be owned. For instance, Commerce and Supply Chain Management licenses are required for full workspace access and functionality. Specialized licenses — such as Operations Activity, Team Member, and Device License — allow for restricted roles and shared device use. Additionally, Microsoft employs a ā€œbase and attachā€ model; your first main license is full price, and additional modules are available at a discount. And, as of November 1, 2025, each user must have an assigned license for D365 Commerce, SCM, or Finance; compliance is monitored through Power Platform reporting tools.

Implementation Tips

  • Regular rule updates: Periodically review and optimize fulfillment rules to keep strategies current and effective.
  • Reliability of data: Integrate and maintain accurate, live data feeds from POS, WMS, and ERP systems.
  • Clear exception management: Set protocols for handling partial orders, backorders, and stock shortages to maintain customer trust.
  • Capacity monitoring: Track license usage and system performance, scaling as your network expands.

Distributed Order Management in D365FO equips businesses to respond rapidly to changing market demands while achieving precise, scalable, and efficient fulfillment operations. With robust integrations and well-defined user roles, organizations benefit from improved flexibility, customer satisfaction, and bottom-line performance.
