Fixing Paper-Based Quality Control in Business Central

Quality Inspector v7.26 is now available for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, and this release focuses on a problem every quality team knows well: catching a failure is only half the job. Figuring out why it happened, keeping your inspection equipment compliant, and getting a nonconformance report out the door all take time that quality teams would rather spend on the shop floor.

Here’s what changed, and why it matters if you’re running quality control inside Business Central.

Seeing the Pattern, Not Just the Failure

The biggest addition in this release is a new Failure Analysis page. Instead of paging through individual test records to spot trends, quality teams can now view failure correlations in one place. If a particular vendor, work center, or lot pattern keeps showing up in failed tests, this is where it surfaces. For teams conducting root cause analysis or supplier corrective action requests, this eliminates much of the manual cross-referencing.

Keeping Testing Equipment (and Approvals) in Compliance

Two changes in v7.26 tighten up process control:

  • Tool calibration enforcement. Quality Inspector now prevents a tool with expired calibration from being used on a test, and it can optionally block recording values altogether when a tool’s calibration is overdue. If your quality process depends on calibrated gauges, scales, or measurement tools, this closes a gap that used to rely on manual tracking.
  • Digital signatures. A new signature data type field lets an inspector capture a sign-off directly on a test. For multi-level approval processes, this means the approval trail lives on the test itself in Business Central, rather than in a separate signed document.

A More Complete Path from Failed Test to NCR

This is the biggest cluster of changes in the release, and together they shorten the distance between “this test failed” and “this nonconformance is documented.”

  • Users can now create an NCR directly from a test, so a failed inspection no longer requires a separate manual step to open a nonconformance report.
  • A new NCR process configuration wizard walks new Quality Inspector installations through setting up their nonconformance report process from scratch.
  • When an NCR is created from an existing test, the NCR Test No. is set automatically, which also supports FAIR Form 3 reporting for teams working to AS9102 or similar standards.
  • The generated NCR PDF can now embed any PDF attachments already on the test, so supporting documentation travels with the report instead of living separately.
  • Quality Inspection Templates now support an NCR template type, making it easier to organize templates by use.
  • Quality Inspector also ships with expanded NCR sample data, giving new installs more realistic examples to work from during setup.

Two Smaller Improvements Worth Knowing About

Rounding out the release: recording date values now uses an improved date picker in Business Central, and the default Word layout for test reports supports multiple tests in a single report, useful for anyone printing or exporting batches of results together.

The Technology Behind Microsoft’s Quality Management Module

Here’s something that doesn’t always come up when people talk about Quality Inspector: if you’ve used the Quality Management module that Microsoft built natively into Business Central, you’ve already used a piece of Insight Works’ engineering.

When Microsoft published the Quality Management module as part of Business Central version 28 (2026 release wave 1), it was created from a licensed subset of Quality Inspector. The two extensions are separate, installed independently, with no dependency on one another. But the core concepts, templates, generation rules, and inspections trace back to the same foundation.

That’s worth knowing for a couple of reasons. First, it means Quality Inspector isn’t a newcomer building quality control features from scratch to compete with a Microsoft product. Insight Works has been building this specific piece of Business Central functionality since before Microsoft’s own module existed. Second, for organizations that start with the native Quality Management module and later find they need more, the path forward isn’t a rebuild. Quality Inspector adds capabilities such as tool calibration tracking, AI-assisted form digitization, numeric expressions for dynamic tolerances, AQL-based sampling, and now the failure correlation and NCR features covered above. An upgrade toolkit is available to move from Quality Management to Quality Inspector without starting over.

For teams currently on the native module and wondering whether they’ve outgrown it, or teams just getting started who want to know how much runway they have before hitting a ceiling, that lineage is useful to understand up front.
