We have a MySQL Server installation on a Windows server. I can log into the Windows server and gain access to all the MySQL data by running the MySQL Workbench. Its IDE and its SQL dialect are enough like SQL Server for me to muddle through.

However, when I try to create a data connection in Power BI Desktop (or Excel, for that matter) I’m stymied by the error message:

It sure looks like a permissions issue. However, there is remarkably little on this error accessible through a Google search. I’ve contacted the company that installed the MySQL Server on our hardware as well as our IT consultants who maintain that hardware… but I thought I’d run this by you fine folks.

Has anyone had to deal with this sort of error while attempting to create a connection in Power BI?

      SIncerely,

      Hi Steve !

Try to install [MySQL Connector/Net 6.6.5 for Microsoft Windows] on your computer. This is like installing a ODBC driver thing.

      and .

I figured it out. Since I’ve never needed to know how to set up accounts in MySQL, all I had to do was use WorkBench to create a user account for myself. I gave myself every single privilege I could, just to be sure!

Then in Power BI, I entered the server name (IP address) with the “:3306″ suffix for good measure, and I entered the database name. Then I got to the ??”MySql database” window. It told me that “We couldn’t authenticate with the credentials provided,” because I don’t have Active Directory credentials to the Windows Server that hosts the MySQL database. So, on the “Windows” tab, I entered the credentials given to me by the engineer at our company that uses the database. Then on the “Database” tab I entered my new MySQL user name and password…et voilĆ ! I saw the “Navigator” window with all the MySQL tables.

Ganesh and Hasham, I had taken your advice last Friday when I was first trying to make a connection. I downgraded from 8.0.17 to 8.0.16. But now I have all the pieces.

      Thank you both for responding!

      Sincerely,
