I am new to Power BI and was wondering how one can use the JASON Power BI Themes? I would love to see the steps in using such themes. I look forward to hearing from you.

There’s a lot more you can do with themes in the recent versions of PowerBI. Just look under the “View” tab and you’ll see there’s many options you can choose from.

If you want to get creative you can create your own theme file but that’s quite a complex task as themes can be created to specify attributes of a lot of items on your dashboards which have to be documented individually.

You can just pick one of the options provided if that works for you. Themes do impact many of the default visuals so you probably have to test different themes using different visuals if you want to be sure you’re getting exactly what you want.

If you really want to get into themes in a big way I could recommend you look at Ruth’s video “JSON Theme Guide and file for Power BI by Curbal”.

      Hi ,

MS has made working with themes quite easy.

You need to go to settings > preview features > customize current themes?.

In this new version, you won’t really need JSON files. The interface is all graphic based.

Once you have a theme set up you can even export it as a JSON right from PBI and use it another file.

If you need any further information please let us know.

      Thank you,

There is a handy tool for building your own themes @ https://themes.powerbi.tips/

Once you have your JSON file you’ll need to follow the steps in the video David Wetton provided.

I would suggest people think hard about the need to generate a custom theme before undertaking the work involved. There are themes available inside PowerBI and also on the web so is it worth the time and trouble to make your own?

I haven’t used the latest version of the tool from PowerBI tips but I attached the document I generated based on what you can anticipate for workloads using the previous version. As you can see everyĀ visual as its own extensive list of attributes which can be modified. There must be hundreds in total so it can be a lot of work.

The other thing that I learned (somewhat the hard way) is when you start generating your theme file you can only do it once i.e. once you download the file you’re not going to be able to open it up again and do some further amendments. At one time I kept my desktop for couple of days as I didn’t want to shut down the file until I had completed everything I wanted even then I didn’t get through everything.Ā Ā I don’t know if that’s the same in the newer version but if you’re going to do it I would test and see if you can save and reopen.Ā

If it’s really essential to get a custom theme it’s certainly possible. Even though I’m not very technically skilled I ended up going into the raw json file (in Notepad) and adjusted the Hex values manually. In retrospect that was probably a pretty crazy thing to do, like I said it’s doable.

Ok David, I did install the latest version of Power BI Desktop and uploaded one of JASON’s Theme and then saved it and re-opened and the theme was not lost it kept the theme I had selected. The same for the Visuals.

So, I guess it would be good to install the latest version and by the way it contains more themes and would not need that much themes from JASON.

      Regards,

      Chuck

Sorry for being a bit unclear. As you pointed out everything is fine when you load one of the default a theme provided by Microsoft inside PowerBI and it will definitely stick.

The challenge I was referring to was when you try to create your own custom theme using the tool from PowerBI tips. It definitely does the job but just be mindful that as far as I know you’re not able to create a new theme and then download it and then try to open it to make further adjustments.

What you create will definitely work you just need to get it right the first time in all areas that you want to include in your theme.

At first glance it seems the tool is working the same way as I see an option to download the product once you create it but no option to start with the product that’s already in existence.

      Hi everyone,

I have attached a zip file here which contains the PBIX files, which has almost all the visuals.

You can test your themes on this file, as to how each visual will be displayed. This way you can experiment with whatever tool you might be using to generate themes, test them and if it doesn’t work change whatever you want to in your theme, until you get it right.

      Hope this helps.

      Thank you,
