Thanks for the excellent resource!
A question… why is it suggested to process the YE GL close on the server? We’re used to doing it on a workstation. In our case, it will require some IT slight-of-hand to get the accounting dept connected to the desktop display on the server.
Thanks again!

Hi
As for the year-end GL closing process done on the server, I’d say it depends on the volume of transactions .. I’ve worked in the past in a company where the process took 2 hours to run from the workstation and generated a 450 pages reports.. which they printed out on paper just to file in cabinets.. what a waste of time and paper.
I suggested them to cut the printout and send it to a file or PDF output, which still took a lot of time to display on screen (since they didn’t had a direct PDF create option, and it was in the old days of GP 7.x / 8.x where you couldn’t change the printer after display on screen) .Running the closing process directly from the server or at least some close linked (think network) Terminal Server can reduce drastically the whole process.? Other posts are talking about performance issues for large batch processing or posting.. it goes in the same topic.
Hope this helps.——————————

Hi ?
The reason is, as mentions, the time it takes to run and so that no interruptions caused by disconnect-with-the-SQL-server issues can possibly occur.
If you do not have a large amount of transactions it should be fine to process from a workstation – just be sure to have a good backup in case it goes sideways.

Backup is important!
I had a CFO killing one year his GP client that was “not responding” while running the GL closing.. Very bad idea and he was alone in the office during the X-mas break.. I had to remotely access the system and restore the previous day’s backup..——————————
