We are trying to greatly reduce our use of the PowerUser Security Role.  For installing new instances of GP, our HelpDesk uses our main PowerUser Role.  Is there a way we could create individual UserIDs for the HelpDesk that would give them only the needed rights for installing GP on a machine, without the ability to access any of the business functions, add/edit/delete users, add/edit/delete Security Roles and Tasks?  If so, what Tasks would this Role need access to?

      Thanks

      See this article:

      http://cdn2.hubspot.net/hub/459548/file-2481020776-pdf/PDF_Files/MinimizingTheUseOfSAInMicrosoftDynamicsGP.pdf?t=1426596952784

It states in the last paragraph:

“Any member of the SysAdmin fixed server role can upgrade from a previous release or install Microsoft Dynamics GP. The SysAdmin fixed server role should be granted by the SQL Server administrator to a GP user on an as needed basis, and should be revoked after the task is complete.”

The article explains in some detail steps you can take to limit the use of sa, and to properly separate functions to provide a safer control environment.

      Hi Robert,

Agree with Bill.. none of my IT folks that do GP Help desk support have a POWERUSER role assigned.. I created a basic IT_HelpDesk role with just the required bare minimum access to manage users in GP, so they can reset passwords, create new users, etc.. Nothing else.

All their GP account needs is the SQL server security role for ‘securityadmin’. that’s it.
