I have a user that when she selects a note in Sales Transactions the note window opens as minimized.

Is there a way to mange how this window opens and where?

Check that user’s dex.ini file for a line called “NoteWindow” followed by 4 sets of numbers. Those numbers are position coordinates for where the Note Window is displayed. Most likely one or more of the number sets will have a minus.  example NoteWindow=-540,-55,-450,-299

Change the negative number to a positive, save the dex.ini and you should be able to see the Notes window when you launch GP again.

A quick & dirty explanation is the coordinates are for a “phantom third screen” that the note window is opening on – you can’t see it.

That’s interesting because we are in a Terminal Server environment so users don’t have their own dex.ini.

I haven’t heard others complain but that doesn’t mean that it’s not happenting.

I look at one of the TS dex.in and the entry in it was:

      NoteWindow=422,-43,450,359

I’m logged into the same TS I checked and even though the dex.ini on that server has a negative note window entry the note window opened just fine for me.

A quick update that I will conform tomorrow.

In a TS environment since users share the same dex.ini there is a dynamics table (SY01405) which contains specific entries for users that override server side dex.ini entries.

I just looked in that table and for the user having the notewindow issue I see that her notewindow settings is:

      -397,105,604,433

I’m going to change the entries for her and see if it resolves the issue. More on Tuesday.

      Hi Jeff

GP Power Tools has a feature that will ensure that windows never open outside of the visible desktop. The feature was designed to prevent issues like this.

Enabling this feature will move a window so it is fully visible regardless of where it tries to open.

This feature is fully multi monitor and DPI % aware.

Also, in the upcoming build 22 release, GP Power Tools adds a new feature where any window in the product can have a position, size and state memory. This information is stored on a per user basis, so users can put windows where they want and it will always open to the same position and size.

      Regards

      David

      Frank,

Most features David put into GPPT comes from the feedback of users like you and me (hacking around GP as an Admin & being puzzled sometimes by some bad design).. Since Microsoft will probably not dedicate any resources on fixing those weird “by-design” behaviors (I don’t call them bugs), there is only one man left : David !!

      Happy Holidays !

Updating the NoteWindow in the Dynamics..sy01405 table making the first entry value a positive number resolved the problem.

We’ve had the same issue on occasion with people that are using laptops with 2nd monitors…. the note window get’s minimized when they click on the note screen in human resources.

I’ve found that a quick easy way to get the window back when you can see it showing as an open window on the start bar, maximize it.. then with the multi-monitor working, grab the titlebar and pull it down/over so it’s re-sizes on it’s own …. Usually this make it’s visible again, and then I just manually resize it to a good size and close the window and usually that fixes it for the user.
