Management Reporter – Reporting Tree Definitions Structure
Posted by Michael-Connolly on September 8, 2017 at 5:07 pm-
?Greetings!
We have a Management Reporter question whichĀ I’m hoping someone has also encountered and/or has some knowledge about that they can share with us. One of our Finance staff created a reporting tree definition for another division (another GP company database) so they could see reports by divisions. The new reporting tree definition, Segment1 – SC, was added under (or in) a new folder called SC Division. When this was initially created, the Reporting Tree Definitions appeared like the following screen shot (with the Segment1 – TX division reporting tree definition under the top level folder, Reporting Tree Definitions.

After this was saved, the Segment1 – TX division reporting tree definition was then positioned below (or in) the SC Division folder (as shown in the screen shot below). When the Segment1 – TX division reporting tree definition is moved back under the top level Reporting Tree Definitions folder by dragging it, it does not stay there even after saving.
Has anyone else experienced the way the system handles this and, if so, has there been a way to overcome it? Is there a method we are overlooking or haven’t come across to where we can move the Segment1 – TX division reporting tree definition back under the top level Reporting Tree Definitions folder and have it stay there? All replies/responses are greatly appreciated!

,>> it does not stay there even after savingĀ <<
I’m not sure what you mean by that. I just tried moving a Tree Def from a folder up under the “Reporting Tree Definitions” using the right-click menu:

Then the “Move Items” dialog appears and I select the top level and click OK:
I don’t have to do anything else… that is, there’s no “save” step involved:
What version of Management Reporter are you using?Sincerely,

?Good morning Steve and thank you very much for your reply!
I have definitely tried using the Move item from the context menu. Although I am able to right click the report tree definition object and have it present the context menu with the Move item, when I click it and highlight the top level Reporting Tree Definitions folder then click OK it acts like it does it, but the segment definition remains under the SC Division folder.
The only way I can visually get it to move under the top level Reporting Tree Definitions folderĀ is to drag it there with the mouse. When I do it this way, though, “it does not stay there even after saving.” After the save is done, the segment definition is moved (by the application) back under the SC Division folder.
We have MR 2012, version 2.1.11002.5.

Mike,
Instead of dragging the tree division, simply rt click the division and select ‘promote’. Ā Does that provide a different result?
Be sure you have THAT divisional Ā company set as the default company when making the move. Otherwise, MR won’t recognize the division.
Let us know.——————————

?Good morning Paul!
I had read on several of the blogs where I was trying to research this on how to use the “Promote” context menu item to do this. However, and I’m not entirely sure why, our installed instance does not have this context menu item available. Perhaps we’re running a few too many CUs behind.
Here’s what I see in the context menu when I right click on the division definition objectĀ (no “Promote”)…
Thank you very much for your reply!

?Mike:If you select open on the menu that you showed so it will open the tree definition itself then right click on the segment that you want to move you should see the promote option.
Thanks

,“Promote” appears in the context menu when you’re editing a specific Tree Definition and you want to re-arrange the reporting units in your Tree to different places:

It isn’t applicable to the directory listing of the Tree Definitions themselves. That’s what “Move” is for.One thing you might try: create a new folder (Test Division) in your “Reporting Tree Definitions” directory tree, and try to Move your Tree Def to the new folder. If that works, then I’d exit Report Designer and start it back up again. Then I’d try to move your Tree Def up to the root level.
I think that your best bet is to upgrade MR to a more current release. The most recent is CU16. You’ll want to get help from your Partner since there have been database changes.
Sincerely,

?Hi, yes agree with Steve that a “Move” or drag and drop the tree into a given folder of the Tree Definitions list is how trees get organized.

?Hello again everyone,
IĀ very muchĀ appreciate everyone’s replies! Everything suggested has (and had been) tried, but the report tree definition will not stay in the top level folder. The exception was that I did not find the “Promote” menu item anywhere in our system. I thought, perhapsĀ that thereĀ may have been something I was missing in order to get this to work. It appears that I will need toĀ set up a test environment with a freshly installed instance of MR. I’m not sure why our production system will not work as suggested and doesn’t have the Promote function available, so this will provide me with a better environment to research and test in.
Thanks again!
Mike

,Again, the “Promote” option only appears when you’re editing a specific Tree Definition and you want to change the indentation level for a branch of the Tree. The only way to change the location of a Tree Definition as a whole in the Tree Def directory structure is via the “Move” option… or by dragging.
