      Hi Folks,
New admin here working on a fairly old and poorly maintained ORG. Finance is trying to reconcile HITB to GL. That discussion has been beaten to death. MY question is simple. We run HITB at the end of each month, after running reconcile in related modules. HITB beginning inventory January 2017 was $1,601,867.00. Running HITB for the same period again now (November), January’s starting balance is now $1,665,146.00. I’m confused as to why that would change so dramatically. What type of procedure or transaction could affect the starting balance in closed periods?

      Hi Jordan.

HITB will not reflect certain types of transactions and also may be affected by things like incorrect cost layers on table IV10200. Ā It would not be easy to determine what is going on. Ā In a recent case we worked on, we had certain item records in that table for items that were later changed to service from sales inventory, for example.

In any case, I would recommend opening a case with Microsoft support so you can be hand-held through the diagnostics process. Ā I am attaching some documentation that might help in case you do not have these yet.

      Hope it helps!

      ?Hi Jordan,
One big reason for a beginning balance difference is running the inventory negative and especially with Lot numbered or Serialized items.Ā  If you override the system and sell inventory that hasn’t been received, it can drive the beginning balance off.Ā  However, that usually drives it lower, not higher.Ā  You might want to check the settings for your report.Ā  Make sure you leave the beginning date blank so that you get a total of ALL inventory there at the specified ending date.Ā
Also, check your beginning numbers in table IV00102 to make sure the quantity is correct.Ā
Was there a valuation change entered?Ā  You indicated a dollar value rather than quantity, so if the valuation is different now, it could affect the extended amount at the beginning if the formula uses the current cost instead of historic.Ā  is your HITB report modified?
Also, make sure you are running maintenance, Reconcile and check links on your Purchasing, Sales and Inventory modules on a regular basis as those can help keep the inventory summaryĀ tables updated.Ā

      Hope some of this helps.

Thanks Teri, it did help quite a bit. I believe our Finance department has been using the HITB incorrectly. If I run it with no start date to the present, the current HITB is about $60k less than current stock status and inventory GL, which seems much more correct.Ā
I also found a strange set of transactions on the HITB. If I set any start and end date, a series of transactions totalling about (-60k) shows up on the report. These transactions show up regardless of the HITB date filters. I can run HITB for June 2014 and they are there, or I can run it for all of 2017 and they are there.Ā Ā
I can look up one of the transactions and trace it to an inventory adjustment made in November of 2017, which is when our problem started. Those transactions ARE currently posted on the GL, but I wonder if there is something off about them causing them to be added to the HITB when they shouldn’t be. I think we are going to run check links and reconcile tomorrow night to see if it fixes the problem.
