When we try to post a project estimate we get the following error:
The combination project/category is mandatory, but does not exist for project xxxxx and category Estimate.

I’m assuming this was a missed step in the project setup, and I would reach out to our partner, but we have no support with them. Our implementation was poorly executed all around and we just started D365 F&O at the start of the year. I would prefer to not have to file a ticket and pay for support if this is something easy to fix on our own.

We have that setup as “Mandatory” on Project/category.

The Mandatory setting on Project/Category means the category must be assigned to the project to enable use of the category on that project.Ā

You have two options for resolving this issue.Ā

Option 1: Change the mandatory setting on the project.

      • Open the project and navigate to the Setup fast tab. Change the Enable category validation field from Yes to No.Ā  This will deactivate the category validation allowing any category to be used on the project.

      Ā

Option 2: Assign the category to the project.Ā

      • Open the project and navigate to the Plan task bar at the top of the screen. Click the Assign categories option.

      • Click on the Category Assignments tab. In the Remaining Categories list, select the categories you want to use on this project.Ā  Click the arrow pointing to the right to move the categories to the Selected Categories list.Ā  You will now be allowed to use the Selected Categories on that project.Ā

It isn’t my decision on changing the status from Mandatory, so I think we need option 2. However, we do already have categories assigned. The error states category “Estimate” which is not a category. I’m not the project manager, just the IT guy trying to help them figure it out since I have full access to see screens/settings they may not have access to. How can we determine which categories are missing?

This particular project is a Fixed-Price project, but per the user that reported the issue to me, it is impact all types of projects.

It might be related to the Project Group assigned to the Project.Ā  Open the project and locate the Project Group on the General tab.

Open the project group from the project.
Go the Estimate tab on the Project Group screen.
Check the Set Up Categories for Estimate section.Ā  I think your issue may be related to the settings here.Ā  Do you have anything setup in these fields?Ā  If not, then this is most likely the cause of your error message.Ā Ā
If you do have values in one or more of these fields, then click on the values and check the settings.Ā Ā

This is how my example is setup.Ā  Note that Estimate is set to Yes.Ā Ā

I’m not positive is this is the cause of your error but it’s one possibility. I hope this helps.
