The original term of “smoke testing” is said to have come from the early days of electronics/hardware manufacturing where as part of the Quality Control process they would turn the productĀ on and ensure that no smoke came out of it from fried components.

In modern software a “smoke test” is generally used to refer to a type of testing that isn’t as rigorous as complete “System Testing” or “Acceptance Testing”, it’s ensuring that core functionality works when light testing is performed. This light testing is often a stepping stone to more complex scenario testing, so would be useful to help find major issues as early as possible during your ERP upgrade.

It’s just another phrase for build testing.

?Correct, it is a test that ensures your build is ok and not broken before you push it to production.. and I strongly advise you do a lot of it

At our company, we use the term when testing in the live production environment.Ā  During the project, we use the terms: conference room pilots(CRP)Ā  and user acceptance testing (UAT).Ā  But after all that is done, and we’ve executed all steps in production, we do a “smoke test” to validate the production environment.Ā  Depending on the project, we will do a series of live transactions to validate.Ā  In our recent R3 upgrade, we did a number of tests which were transactions we “real” transactions.Ā  It was a limited set of transactions that we performed during our CRP and UAT.
