      Hello,

We went live with D365 F&O in November 2020 and now looking to start implementing Master Planning in D365.Ā  Was wondering if anyone could recommend the general steps needed to be completed to implement Master Planning at a high level?

      Looking for something like this:

      1. Setup calendars
      2. Setup operations
      3. Set up resources and resource groups
      4. Setup routes
      5. Setup coverage groups/item coveage

We are struggling forming a project plan and want to make sure we get all steps required and in the right order.Ā  Any guidance or pointing us in the right direction would be appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Tim

These might help to get you started:

Set up master planning – Supply Chain Management | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Docs ( Good place to start)

      Tim,

I came across this blog post when setting up AX 2012 R3 that proved to be quite useful. I haven’t set up a D365 environment but from what I’ve seen so far there don’t appear to be many differences.

      Hi Tim –

This sounds more like an implementation of Production and MRP. I would suggest setting up Production first and then move to MRP.

My overall advice would be to engage a partner to help with the effort. A couple of reasons why….

      1. Some implementation decisions cannot be reversed or easily ($$$) reversed. A partner can help you avoid those pitfalls. I see this with frequency. DIY functional implementations that require later cleanup and reimplementation.
      2. Implementations are a great opportunity to change how things are done in a company and often a partner is needed to drive that change.
      3. Implementations can devolve into paralysis if long simmering process debates dominate and often a partner is needed to quickly drive those decisions to resolution.
      4. Partners are experienced in the breadth of choices found in Production and MRP.

AXUG, please help with the list.

      Questions to answer first:

      1. Operations or Job Scheduling of Production Orders (or Batch Orders)? Briefly, Operations Scheduling schedules Production Orders to the day. Job Scheduling schedules to the day/hour/minute, creates Jobs, and allows use of Gantt (on Production/Batch Order). Schedule to the Resource Group or Resource.
      2. Will BOMs be Site specific? If BOMs are not Site specific then Production Units will be needed.
      3. Where will G/L accounts be pulled from? Cost Category, Resource, or Production Group?
      4. What to use in the Route Group and how many Route Groups?
      5. Begin with Planning Optimization now and avoid a later move from MRP to Planning Optimization?
      6. Set the MRP Coverage Plan by Dimension for Warehouse? Found on the Storage Dimension Group. What to use for the MRP Coverage hierarchy?

Brief List of Overall Data Setup:

      Production Control

      1. Foundation data setup (Released Products, Sites, etc).
        • Check Default Order Settings | Default Order Type field (Production or Purchase Order).
      2. Release Products (Make) | Engineer tab | Active BOM Versions | New BOM and BOM Version. Some key settings to consider.
        • Site specific or not.
        • BOM Line Type selection.
        • Flushing selection.
      1. Organization Administration | Setup | Calendars | Working Time Templates.
      2. Organization Administration | Setup | Calendars | Calendars (Working Times | Compose Working Times).
      3. Production Control | Setup | Routes | Shared Categories. Mark as Production.
      4. Production Control | Setup | Routes | Cost Categories.
        • G/L accounts
        • Prices
      1. Production Control | Setup | Routes | Route Groups.
      2. Production Control | Setup | Production | Production Units
      3. Organization Administration | Resources | Resource Groups.
      4. Organization Administration | Resources | Resources.
        • Normalize to minutes?
      1. Production Control | Setup | Routes | Operations.
      2. Release Products (Make) | Engineer tab | Route | New Route and Route Version.

      MRP (Legacy, not Planning Optimization)

      1. Master Planning | Setup | Master Planning Parameters.
      2. Master Planning | Setup | Plans | Masters Plans.
      3. Master Planning | Setup | Coverage | Coverage Group
        • Released Product Item Coverage?

I just skimmed the surface here.

      Thanks…..Dave
