Serial # creation at Sales Line entry
Posted by Rich Gearheart on April 11, 2017 at 12:47 pm-
We need to have a Serial Number created at the time a Sales Line is entered. Ā We use a couple of generic items (NonStockTrack, NonStockBlock etc..) that represent a custom request for a part that is not in our Standard catalog. Ā The serial # is used to tie that Sales Line to a specific work order/BoM Journal etc.. Ā The items are set for Serial Control in the tracking group and have the ‘Order Activation’ box set on the Serial Number group, but the Serial Numbers are not being created when the line is entered. Ā Any Ideas on what I am missing here?

Hi Rich,In your number group form, there are three boxes:
– Manual
– Only for Inventory Transactions
– On Physical UpdateIf you tick the box “Only for Inventory Transactions”, the will create the batch / serial number at the time of order creation.Ā Once you save your sales order line, if you look at your inventory transactions with this ticked, you will see a serial number.Ā Make sure you also set the “Per Qty” field to 1 so you do get unique serial numbers.
Please let me know if this works for you!

Hi Genie,
Thanks for the reply. Ā Unfortunately, that didn’t work. I have attached the screenshots showing the setup of the Number Group with the ‘Only For Inventory Transactions’ set and the Per qty set to 1. and the resulting Inventory Transaction from creating a new sales line. ĀRich

Hi Rich,
Typically in AX, if you’re automating the creation of the serial number, it comes from the source of the inventory. So the serial number could be generated automatically via the PO or production order that puts the item into stock. The sales order then just picks and ships based on what serial numbers are available in inventory. You can use marking and reservations or create purchase and production orders straight from the Sales order to get that link, but the serial number itself is coming from the receipt of the item, not the issuing of it.
The order activation really only would automatically generate a new SN for return sales orders because those are receipts. Standard sales orders are issue transactions so no automatic generation of the number comes from those. I think you’d have to do a customization to achieve what you want.——————————

Hi Rich,ĀDid you try Serial Number with “Active only in Sales” – this will enable to register serial number only for sales.
With this Tracking Dimension group “Active in sales enabled” serial number can be registeredĀ only during the sales process on Sales packing slip posting we have option for Update line > Register serial numbers
With this option, Active Serial numbers are still recorded in the InquiriesĀ > serial numbers along with the traditional Inventory Serial numbers. Also I think it can be viewed in the Item tracing form as well..
But with this configuration limitation is that auto serial numbers cannot be generated as in the traditional, for individual line item in sales orders to be registered manually, and also these serial numbersĀ will not updated on the inventory transactions..

I’ll follow up Andrew’s comment with a note that creating & releasing a unique configId that represents the unique configuration may be a better fit for the requirement…

Hi Rich,
I was interested in Genie’s suggestion because I’ve run into this in the past as well.Ā I had the same results you did and I believe Andrew is correct, that AX will only create a serial number forĀ inventory receiptĀ transactions.Ā And unfortunately I believe Girish’s suggestion will only allow auto-creation of serial numbers on at packing slip or invoice About registering serial numbers in the sales process [AX 2012] .
