      Good Afternoon,

In AX 2012 Finance and Operations, in setting up Operation Relations in the tab Setup we canĀ enter a costing resource.Ā  We can also go to the Resource Requirements tab, add a requirement type = resource, and enter a resource.Ā  When does AX use theĀ costing resource and when does AX use the resource requirementsĀ of type resource ?

      Thank you,
      Barclay

      Hey Barclay,

AX uses the costing resource when it’s trying to find the appropriate cost price to use for the labor.Ā  The resource requirements are used for scheduling.Ā  In AX 2012 and D365, it’s not required to select a “resource” type resource requirement, so the costing resource let’s AX know what it should use for costs if the operation could be scheduled across any number of resource or resource groups.

      ?Barclay,

You don’t have to use theĀ costing resource in your route lines, but you can.Ā

I can’t tell you if it’s gospel, but it looks this way to me:
Each resource has default cost categories.Ā  And, if you use these defaults in your route lines, then, the resource (and its default cost categories) become your costing resource.

However, in our set up,Ā we don’t use costing resources on our routes lines.Ā  That’s because the cost ofĀ our resourcesĀ are variable; so, we use cost categories in the route lines to drive all our costing; costing is handled at the route line, not at the resource.

So then, in our setup, every route line requires:
      A route group
      A resource (or resource group)
Cost categories (the number of these is determined by the route group)

Again, in our case, resources don’t use cost categories; only the route lines do.Ā  So, in our resources, the cost categories are blank, and no costing resource is indicated on the route line.

The consequence is that costing is accomplished through the cost categories on each route line, and planning and scheduling is accomplished through the resources.

      I hope this helps.
