I need to ability to change BOM components on the sales order line after explosion.Ā  Item is direct delivery from vendor for components and sometimes the vendor has to substitute a different component.
      BOM1
      Ā Widget A
      Ā Widget B
      Ā Widget CĀ

Vendor says I cannot get A so I will replace it with C. Need to remove A and add C on the SO line
What configuration can I use to do this or have the ability to have multiple versions per BOM

      Hi Deb –Ā

Have a look at the Sub BOM field on the Sales Order line. That can be used if you have alternate BOMs.

Might be a solution in that functionality for you.

      Thanks…..Dave

The question to me is, do you need to change the BOM on the sales line or on the production order? Once a production order is firmed and estimated, you can change the component on the BOM there.
If you want to change it on the Sales order there are multiple ways:
      – Create a second BOM version with the alternative BOM and associate that BOM Version to the sales order line as Sub-BOM (Make sure you have “Use the specified BOM or Formula Versions activated in your coverage groups though !!). If there are only few alternative Components that can be used, it might be beneficial to pre-create all valid BOM-Versions for the finished product, so you can simply select the right version on order entry – or later.Ā
      – If the creation of a new BOM and BOM Version is too cumbersome, and it happens too often, consider creating a product configuration model for the finished product that allows you to generate the new finished product variant (and with that the related BOM and Route)Ā
Really depends on how often this problem occurs and – most importantly – if the substituting component is already known upfront.Ā

      Hope that helps.

The change is needed on the sales order.
Sales order line has a BOM that explodes on the order line.Ā  The exploded components are direct delivery from the vendor.
The vendor calls and says I cannot get component C but I can replace it with D.Ā  I can change the vendor PO by removing C and adding D – it adds D to the sales order but does not remove component C.Ā  How can I accomplish this where the user can be on the sales order and replace component C with D?

I’d be looking at Conrad’s suggestion of configuration models all the way. It is what it is designed for.

Only pit fall may be if you firm the production order too early!?
