      Hello
I want to get more understanding about an inventory quantity adjustment transaction in D365 to see if I understand it and decide whether I will prevent our users from having access to it.Ā Ā I was told there is an inventory adjustment method that does not post a double-sided accounting journal.Ā  I went digging and with some help found this transaction:

      1. Product information management / Release Product
      2. Select an item
      3. Menu: Manage inventory / View: On-hand inventory
      4. This brings item up in form with locations and quantities visible.
      5.Ā Menu: Quantity adjustment
      6. This switches view from a form to a pop-up window called counting.Ā Ā
      7. At this point I can edit the ‘quantity’ field to a new value and hit ok.Ā
      8. System processes…
      9. On-hand quantity appears changed to new value.

I tried to determine if this creates a counting journal or inventory journal of any kind – it doesn’t appear to – but it does appear in the ‘transactions’ form available in same place.Ā  In fact, I tried to add columns to see if their was a voucher created and the financial voucher field does get populated, but I was unable to take the voucher and go look it up in ‘voucher transactions’ in general ledger.

Can someone confirm if this is non-journal transaction, subledger only?
Would it make sense in some organizations to prevent its use?
Is there a good explanation of it somewhere?Ā Ā

      Thank you!

      Good morning Calvin,

You are partially correct, this method of adjusting inventory doesn’t make a transactional journal (movement, counting, etc) so there’s no way to trace who did the transaction, but it does create a “virtual” journal and post into the ledger.Ā  If you go to the transactions form, select that transaction (Reference should say “counting”) and click Ledger -> Financial voucher in the ribbon bar you’ll see the ledger impact.Ā  I’ve attached a screen shot from a demo environment to show you what I see.

      Thanks,

      Thanks for help and responses!

I can pull up the voucher transaction screen like that but it is blank.Ā  I attached some screen shots. Which is still reinforcing the idea that I didn’t create a two sided journal.Ā Ā I am wondering if there is configuration – how does system know an offset account like your example shows?Ā  If so where is that config?

      Calvin,

It looks like your posting profiles aren’t set up correctly.Ā  You should have ledger accounts set up at Inventory management -> Setup -> Posting -> Posting on the inventory tab.Ā  That transaction will use the following accounts accordingly:

      Inventory issue
      Inventory expenditure, loss
      Inventory receipt
      Inventory expenditure, profit

Attached is the setup in the demo environment I used for that transaction

OK – problem solved – naturally it was a mistake on my end.Ā  The test item I was using had a variant with no cost set up.Ā  Once we tested the transaction with an item that did have a cost I could see the voucher and two sided journal entry, so everything is in order.Ā  Thanks for taking the time to look at this issue with me.

One other thing to add, is that there is no way, anywhere in the system, to post a one sided accounting transaction.
