Does AX provide a natural schema or format (that X12 or EDIFACT data can be map too) that will validate data and allow for creation of sales orders in AX?

It does more or less. If you go to system Administration > Setup > Services and Application Integration Framework. You can create an inbound port and add a service operation of SalesSalesOrderServce.Create. You can then use this to create new orders or update existing orders. There is a lot more to it than this you will have to consume it as a NetTCP service or setup a file adapter to pull in your XML or a few other options but this is the first step.

The AIF is the way to do this. there are standard document types for things like sales order, purchase order etc. be aware that you might have to do some customization of the documents to make them work for you but then once the AIF endpoint is setup it should work smoothly

      Hi Paul,

      Thanks for your response.
Is the AIF a standard format that I can map my X12 documents too?  If so, does it provide any data validation for the successful creation of sales orders? (Hopefully these question make sense)

      Thanks again,
      Jim Majernik

I am not a developer, but, yes the document services  has one for sales order create. There is validation when it is adding records. Also they are customizable.

I am using a third party EDI provider that uses AIF to import into sales orders.

We use DataMasons as a  3rd party provider which uses the AIFFramework as Kelly mentioned, The doit yourself method is
possible as Justin Mentioned, but I would caution it unless you will have few trading partners, few and simple transactions and the bandwidth to work on it. We found many scenarios to handle for invoicing including how credits are processed which the 3rd party are used to handling.

I would second the opinion on Datamasons as a great EDI solution. We attempted in house EDI in previous versions of AX and eventually gave up and went with third party interface. Saved us from a lot of headaches. I can’t comment on 2012 as we don’t do EDI where I am now.
