Scenario:

Item A has a purchase lead time of 90 days. It is received to warehouse 1. A group of customers are serviced from warehouse 1 that are all direct delivery customers.

Item A is also sold to another group of customers from warehouse 2 where the items are stocked as a make-to-stock item. There is a 45-day transfer time from warehouse 1 to warehouse 2 so the total cumulative lead time is 135 days. Purchase orders are placed monthly to supply both the direct delivery customers and the transfer warehouse.

In our test environment we have the warehouse dimension turned on. Item A is set up so that the purchases are planned for warehouse 1 and the transfers are planned for warehouse 2. The warehouse hierarchy is set so that warehouse 1 supplies warehouse 2. Everything looks to come out correctly with the exception that the requirement date for both the purchase order receipt and transfer receipt fall on the same day. The start date and receipt date of the transfer order are 45 days apart. The expectation was the start date of the transfer would be the same as the purchase receipt date and the transfer receipt date would be 45 days later.

Does anyone know what we might be missing in our set up that is causing master planning to not line those dates up? The expectation was the start date of a transfer order would serve as a requirement date for a purchase order.

Hi Greg,

Where did you put the 45 day transfer time?  It should be on  the Item Coverage for Warehouse 2.  As well, are you basing your planning on the requirement date or the futures date / delay date based?  If the requirement, in warehouse 2, is past due (less than lead time of transfer) and you are basing it on requirement date, the start and receipt dates may end up being the same.  As well, do you have set, in your MP Parameters, to use dynamic negative days?  I would start here and use this settings first, else turn on to use to use futures date instead of requirement date for transfers. (Found in Plan Code)  I apologize if they aren’t called the same in your version, but you didn’t specify which version you are running.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, probably should have mentioned we are using AX 2012 R3.

Andrew – I did not have the transport days set up. I have now populated that table.

Genie – I have the 45-day transfer time set up on the item coverage for WHS 2. Default for WHS 1 is Purchase Order with 90 day lead time and default for WHS 2 is Transfer Order with 45 day lead time. The planning is based on futures date. We have the master planning parameters set to use dynamic negative days.

After visiting these settings and re-running master planning I’m still getting the same result. The dates in isolation (purchase time & transfer time) are correct but the issue is that they don’t line up.

The start date for the planned transfer is 9/14 and end date is 10/29.

The planned purchase to cover that transfer has a start date of 7/27 and end date of 10/25.

We were expecting the planned transfer starting 9/14 to require the purchase to be received by 9/14.

I have a similar scenario with prod->transfer->prod and the start date of the prod order being the same as the end date on the transfer order.

Hi Greg, there was a hotifx in CU12 that ensures planned orders cannot be generated in the past. It’s done via a new checkbox on the Master plan:

Without that hotfix, you could get planned orders in the past if the date needed plus the lead times would put the order date into the past. With the fix, when it finds a scenario like that, it should now calculate the current date as the earliest planned order date and then use the lead time to tell you the expected receipt/delivery and Action messages and Delays will then propose changes in case an order will be late or early based on the demand date. However, if you have the system setup to plan based on futures date, your suggestions will plan to that date (the realistic date it thinks your supply can achieve), even if the TO has a ship date of earlier.

Hi Beth,

We did eventually get this working. Eventually, it ended up being a combination of data points, most already mentioned, as well as the time fences for coverage groups involved. I’ve lost some of the detail because this was something we were testing in the last hours before Go Live but can review the settings on the items involved if you need more help. I definitely recommend following all the guidelines already laid out here because when I reviewed ours some were missing values or were set up with incorrect values.

Do you have a Transport time set between your warehouses? You can set this in Inventory Management > Setup > Distribution > Transport days.
