I’ve written two blog posts recently about how to go about setting up security from both the user interface and AOT in D365FO and the pro’s and con’s of each, feel free to check them out.

Setting Up Security in Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations – Part I – From the User Interface

Setting Up Security in Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations – Part II – From the AOT

You can also check out the rest of my D365FO blog if you would like to learn about the security changes from AX 2012 to D365FO.

Feel free to reach out with any questions or comments you might have.

      Hey Alex,

These are great, clear write ups.

I think security configuration – knowing when to do what, and how – is one of the most painful parts of the implementation process.Ā  I’ve bookmarked your posts for reference in future discussions.

      Thanks!

      Josh,

I agree that setting up security within D365FO (especially when trying to keep change control and security portability in mind) is difficult and can be confusing. Hopefully these blog posts have helped!

      ?Hi Alex-

I attended your breakout on security at Focus and was very excited to walk away with your Security and Audit Field Manual. As we are just in the scoping phase of our implementation, this has been very useful especially when looking at roles and privileges. Now that I know there is a blog, as well, I will be adding that to my favorites list for easy reference.

      Thanks for posting!

      Robin

      Robin,

I’m glad you have found the book and blog helpful!

I also did a white paper surrounding how to set up least privilege security in D365FO, it can be found here:
Maximize D365FO Security, with Least Privilege Access

      Gofastpath remove preview
Maximize D365FO Security, with Least Privilege Access
When it comes to access security many companies tend to have users with more access than they need, this access can mean excessive, unnecessary risk. Get this white paper now to understand how to develop a least privilege security plan in order to maximize security.

Good luck with your implementation! Feel free to reach out with any security questions you might have.

      Alex-

Thanks for the additional information. I have downloaded the white paper and will follow up if I have additional questions. I look forward to speaking with you at Summit in October!
