We’ve started work on some custom cubes using AX and VS. At the moment we’re constructing our Perspective in the AOT, adding the data tables and views and setting the relevant Attributes and Measures etc. When we deploy the changes to the server through AOT deployment using the Business Information Tools menu everything works as expected. However we sometimes need to add Calculated Measures and also define extra dimensions, so open the generated Visual Studio project through the AOT. We make the changes we need and deploy to the server, again everything works fine.
But when we need to change anything in the Perspective AOT again, and deploy through AX again, we lose the changes we’re making in Visual Studio. I’ve tried re-importing the generated project into the AOT but it doesn’t seem to make any difference.
A few things that always seem to revert are
– any calculated measures
– the default deployment settings in VS (connection string and server)
– any changes to dimensionsSo, my question is – is there anything specific we need to do to make sure that when we’re making changes after opening the project in Visual Studio, they filter back to the AOT and nothing is lost, as doing a reimport of the project (right clicking in the AOT area for Analysis Services Projects) doesnt seem to actually work for us.
I’d appreciate any advice on where we’re going wrong.
Thanks

I am working with Jet Reports with super results. The Jet Data Manager let me stand up a Dynamics AX Sales Cube and Finance Cube in about a week. The support has been terrific too. Please contact me if you want more information. Blaine 780 918 6165——————————

Well, I will stick my neck out here, since I have only a small amount of working in this area, but as I remember, you can’t make changes to the perspective after you have deployed, without losing the VS project and its changes. You have to get your perspective correct with all the tables, views, queries, etc. exactly right, and then make your changes in VS.I certainly hope š I am right, I think I am. There should be others who can either confirm or deny this. Best wishes, custom cubes within Dynamics AX are no picnic.

Andy,We’ve also built custom cubes in SSAS, for later analysis using Tableau. Our approach was custom ETL out of the AX database rather than the built-in cube definitions. We’ve had a very good experience; happy to share more with you if any interest.
