I am in my 3rd week on a new job and was tasked to explore the EOL for AX 2012 R3 and our options as an organization. I am new to the AX world, so I was rather dismayed to discover our current version is nearing the end of its extended support life cycle. I know we can continue to work with AX past 01/10/23, but am extremely anxious for the level of risk we would be exposed to.

I’m going to recommend we begin the upgrade process, but our software partner said our conversion would be cumbersome due to our large amount of customization. I don’t get warm fuzzies about converting before the EOL. I’m curious if we have any users out there that are on older versions and how you handle no support from Microsoft?

Any ideas or feedback would be welcome!

Hi Eric, first thing I would tell you is your not alone in have a AX 2012 R3 instance running and not having a plan upgrade by January 2023.  We have multiple AX instances and we will not have them all moved to D365 or something else by the date.  I’ve used AX going back a few versions and the first thing I would tell you is every move to the next version is a reimplementation.  Sounds like you have reached out to your partner and you have quite a bit of customization.  There was 5 CU for R3 the latest being CU13.  CU13 has a path to help with the data move.  It may or may not be worth the effort to get there as any CU update brings retesting existing customizations.  Personally if I was you I would just focus on a having the discussion and putting  a plan together for now and no don’t sweat the January 2023.  You might want to check your SQL version as well.  AX 2012 R3 is supported on SQL 2016.  SQL 2014 has a July 2024 end of life and is in extended end of life now.  Good Luck, feel free to send me a personal message if you have any other questions.
