      Hello,

There are many places within Dynamics AX 2012 R3 where I would like to auto-generate and print a thermal label and a 8×14 laser report when I perform specific function without using a mobile device. For instance, the last step in the Product Receipt process is the selecting of “Post all” to put the product into inventory. I would like to set up a trigger to auto-generate and print a license plate label (thermal printer) and a 8×14 pallet tag (laser printer) for each pallet the receiving clerk registers.

Does such a trigger exist “Out of the Box” in Dynamics AX 2012 R3 or does this require custom programming?

      Thanks,
      Durwin

      Durwin,

Unfortunately such a trigger does not exist in “out of the box”.  The receipt process can generate serial numbers for items being received.  You could customize AX to generate the licence plate tag by a similar process. I am curious as to how AX would know  how many pallets the received items would need so as to generate a new plate number?

Bottom line… this would need to be custom code and a custom field/number sequence for the Plate Tag.

      Tracy-Ann,

Thank you for the information. I suspect this is same for when executing Report as Finish (RAF) also. If we want to auto-generate a thermal label or 8×14 report when executing RAF, no trigger exists and this must functionality must be addressed through custom programming.

I agree with Tracy-Ann and would say yes to your follow up question. The only real out of the box printing triggers come from the mobile device. And even then, your design of the label is happening in a third party product and then pasting the ZPL text into document routing. It’s also currently limited to a few transactions. Your best bet is working with an add-on or customizing if you want to trigger printing at certain points of the transaction and controlling the layout and content of the labels.

Thank you for the confirmation Andrew.

We too have been using third-party software to design and build the label formats and sending  the output to a data file rather than to the Zebra printer. Capturing the ZPL code in this manner has really saved us development time through the years. What I like about the Dynamics AX 2012 (DAX) approach in printing labels is that it will allow us to use many of our existing ZPL files almost “as-is” with the exception of the variable names. Second, DAX stores the ZPL code in an easily accessible text box where it can be maintained by a user rather than a developer. By DAX making the ZPL code easily accessible, the amount of time it will take to implement new and modified label formats should be significantly reduced.

Taking advantage of these benefits will definitely aid us during our label conversion process.
