      Research time!

I would like to hear any recent NAV/BC (esp. NAV to BC) upgrade stories about any surprises.

Once upon a time, there was a company that worked very closely with their partner to review all their modifications before starting their upgrade.Ā
First they reviewed the standard functionality in Business Central and then they eliminated as many of the modifications from their initial implementation as possible.
Using a Sandbox Environment, they created test scenarios on how the new functionality in Business Central would replace those original modifications.
The partner, starting with base Business Central converted the very few modifications that were required into an extension and applied the extension to the company’s Sandbox Environment.
The company had key Users test the extension.Ā  Changes to the extension were requested, the partner completed changes and the key Users re-tested the changes.
After all the testing and re-work was completed, the company scheduled training sessions for all of their Users and the company set aside time, during regular work hours, over several weeks for each User to practice in the Sandbox and to ensure they had the necessary permissions to complete their work.
The week before the cutover, Teams Meetings were scheduled with all the Users.Ā  During these Teams Meetings, each User was required to demonstrate proficiency in performing their work.
The cutover was a huge success and everyone lived happily ever after.
The moral of the story is planning, communicating, testing and practicing.

Bumping this thread for a second attempt at responses (although I do appreciate my good friend’s wise comments about being prepared!)

I would like to hear from anyone who upgraded from and to any version of NAV or BC.Ā  Let us know the good, bad, and ugly.

What unexpected obstacles did you encounter?
What functions did the new version of the software have that you did not expect?
What unexpected issues did you have during the upgrade process?
What unexpected events or findings did you have during implementation, go-live, or even after go-live?

      Hi Lewis,

We moved from Nav2017 to BC (Saas) – 1st April 2022.

We handled it internally with lots of development training so we could make minor modifications.Ā  We never didn’t any customisation in Nav that required a developers licence.

The whole project was treated as a new implementation rather than using the upgrade processes.Ā  It went well with planning and time!!

Don’t underestimate time required for document layouts in RDLC for example.

We just went from BC 14 to BC 20 CU 4 this week.

Permissions got hosed. Many of our user defined permissions sets are gone. Just Gone. The nice thing is that when you look at the User Card, the missing permission sets are highlighted in Red. We had trouble editing permission sets that were still there. We gave up and created a new permission set. That has been working. Also, “Effective Permissions” works about one out of 10 times.

Pages just crash. Not necessarily custom pages. No rhyme or reason, they just crash. Time to close the browser and reopen. In some cases we had to reboot the computer.

Posting is updating every table just fine except the Item Ledger table. We are still trying to debug that. This is happening in places where there is no customization and in places with customizations. We are going to have to fix a lot of Item Ledger entries because the ownership of the company will not let us stop posting until we fix the bugs. Another problem is that the issue is intermittent. In many cases we can’t replicate the issue in our test database.

The new E-mail system is awful. Our IT Manager and Innovia worked two days to get approvals working again – all related to getting the new E-mail to work. We used the SMTP option in testing and it worked fine. In our LIVE environment it became intermittent.

There have been a lot of other little quirks, too. What is interesting is that we thoroughly tested, but I guess you can never test too much. It seems like everything worked fine as long as one or two users are in there. We immediately made a testing database after the upgrade. Things that are going South in our LIVE database work just fine in our test database. That is making it extremely difficult to debug the issues. Obviously we don’t want to debug in a Live database, but some instances we have had no choice.

I miss the desktop client šŸ™

Maybe you guys or someone from Innovia could share the lessons learned about the notifications and emailing?Ā  Any “it is better this way” or light-blub(s) regarding this?

      Again Gregory thank for sharing.

      Hi Ronald,

What I’ve been doing lately and been much more powerful way of sending emails and notifications within Business Central is to utilize Power Automate. It allows you to expand beyond the built-in components. Power Automate not only allowed me to do the basic emails and notification but also expand the information to Microsoft Teams and other external components where I need the info to flow. I believe everyone should consider Power Automate around notifications and Emailing.
