Random Error Message

Our Nav users (Nav 2015) are receiving a random, intermittent error message when we try to print or print preview a report. This happens to users in different departments, running different reports, and seems to come and go (meaning, I might receive the error repeatedly but then be able to run the report, and then receive the error message again the next time even if it’s immediately after the successful report generation.) We have encountered this in Invoicing, Payroll, Inventory, AR. We have rebooted our servers, shut down our computers, anything we can think of and still get the error message randomly and intermittently. Here is the error message:
An error occurred when loading the Report Print Preview window. The definition of the report ” is invalid. Any ideas or suggestions for resolution are greatly appreciated!
Thank you –

A few questions for you.
- Is this a new problem?
- Have you upgraded any portion of your environment?
- Windows Server OS
- SQL Server
- Client PC OS
- Have you monitored the performance of you Service Tier?
With some additional information, then you should be able to start to isolate the issue.

Did you ever find a solution to this problem?Ā We are now experiencing the exact same issue and have not been able to resolve.——————————

Wow, this is a tough one. You’d have to run your debugger when this is happening and seeing why the Report Number is coming out blank.Definitely make sure all the clients are on the same version as your service tier.

Hello:Nothing worse than nonsensical error messages – I sympathize! Ā
Are you on the latest set of hotfixes for NAV 2015?Ā Each month a new batch is released by Microsoft for supported NAV versions.Ā Whenever we have error messages that we can’t resolve or make sense of, we start by applying the latest patches and trying again.Ā Then we make sure all our Server and SQL patches are up to date, followed by reboots (we patch every month, but sometimes a patch is needed to fix the most recent patch!).Ā
It’s not always the answer, but it has resolved problems in the past for us.
Please share with us once the issue has been resolved – wishing you the best!

The first thing I would suggest is for either you or your friendly neighborhood solution center compile every report object. It is possible (especially with 2015) that the object metadata needs updating. Heck, compile every object just to be sure. Then restart all of your service tiers (you’ll want to do these steps off-hours).
Are any of the reports using a different layout other than RDLC such as Word?
When did the problem start? if that was recently, do you have any idea what might have changed, such as a recent customization being released to your live system?

We have already recompiled all of the reports, and restarted the service tiers but no luck. The weird thing is that when we run NAV through Remote Desktop and try to print or preview a report, we don’t have this issue. And this happens to multiple users on multiple clients, across various locations.

Have you checked the event logs on the service tier? These might have more details about the error.
You might also try running the debugger on a session that runs these report often, There’s a chance it might pick up the error and at least show you where the failure is happening. Long shot, but might help.——————————

I might also ask if you’ve had customizations to Codeunit 1 or possibly another codeunit involved in report layout selection.——————————

The first thing we did was run debugger but found nothing. We then checked the event logger on the clients and then on the service tiers, and nothing was recorded.——————————

Could it be that an SQL server cumulative update was installed on the SQL SSRS host ?——————————
