We use NAV 2013 R2.Ā  Our controller would like to change the Inventory Posting Group on 5 existing items.Ā  The set up for them now is that they hit a COGS account.Ā  He wants to change them to an expense item and hit an inventory G/L account.Ā  Since there are already purchases, transfers and sales on these items, do we need to do a negative adjustment at the old IPG, make the change to the item cards and then do a positive adjustment with the new IPG?Ā  Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

You could do that or you could just do a general ledger transaction to move the dollars from the COGS account to the inventory account.

If these items are currently sitting on any unposted documents or in any unposted journals, those transactions will still carry the old settings….so you may have to watch for further adjustments…

I have already verified that these items are not on any open sales lines, purchase lines or assembly bom’s. I will discuss doing a G/L journal entry with our controller.

You can change the IPG on an item at any time without affecting any posted entries. The only places it wouldĀ affect are the OPEN lines for that item – Sales Lines, Purchase Lines, BOM Lines, Item Journals. So, once you update the item with new IPG, please revalidate the item No. on those lines and then you shouldĀ be good to go.

No need toĀ do any negative adjustment for prior postings. If you DO need to move the amount from posted entries to the new GL account, then I would just do a GL journal transaction for those and going forward it will be all posted to the correct account per new IPG.

This one can be a little tricky if not all the costs for the item are adjusted, as in “Adjust Cost – Item Entries”.Ā  Even if you may not have open documents with the items, if there are un-adjusted entries it will want to adjust them with the old posting groups.Ā  So, make sure that process, as well as “Post Inventory Cost to G/L” have been run.

One time G/L Adjustment and update the proper posting groups on the Item card should work
