AI as Architect: Using Copilot to Design and Build Automations That Run Without It

Session Overview: Not every automation needs AI in production. But every automation can be built faster and smarter with AI in the design phase.
This session introduces a practical methodology for using Copilot as your automation architect: diagnosing manual workflow bottlenecks, designing the solution logic, generating working Excel Office Scripts and Power Automate flows, and then deploying a final automation that runs on schedule without AI dependencies, Copilot licensing costs, or hallucination risk. The result is intelligent automation where the intelligence is in how you built it, not in how it runs.
We’ll walk through the full pipeline using several live demos that use Excel and Power Automate in the final solution but Copilot only as the tool to discover and configure quickly.
Along the way, you’ll learn a repeatable four-step framework: Diagnose, Design, Build, Deploy, that you can apply to any process in your organization. You’ll also get an honest decision guide for when a process genuinely needs embedded AI versus when a well-built automation is the smarter, cheaper, and more reliable answer. This is the session for anyone who feels pressure to “do AI” but suspects that most of their problems just need better automation and wants to use AI to get there faster.
Learning Objectives:
- Apply a four-step framework: Diagnose, Design, Build, Deploy for using Copilot to analyze manual business processes, generate working Excel Office Scripts and Power Automate flows, and deliver production-ready automations without AI runtime dependencies.
- Use Copilot in Excel and Power Automate as a code generation and solution design tool turning natural language process descriptions into working scripts and flows while understanding how to validate, refine, and test AI-generated outputs before deployment.
- Evaluate when a business process genuinely requires embedded AI in the final solution versus when a scheduled, deterministic automation is the smarter choice, reducing cost, complexity, and governance burden without sacrificing the speed advantages of AI-assisted development.
