      Hi all,

I have created a small simple tabular model in SSAS 2016 (developer edition) on-prem, as a proof of concept. When I connect live to in PBI Desktop it works as expected, however when I publish to web I get an error, see first image below.

After many many hours of reading, I am confused and immensely frustrated.

If anyone can answer the following questions, with a degree of certainty I would be very grateful.

      1. Does the Power BI Service support live connections to SSAS tabular on-prem?
        1. If yes, could the fact that mine doesn’t work be because I am currently using the developer edition (That was mentioned in one MS support document)
        2. If no, why the heck not!?!?! What is the point in having one central model that reports are based on, that people can’t view?! Another MS doc says it’s not supported, see second image. Also saw that written by Adam Saxton buried deep in the comments of a YouTube video..
      2. Why doesn’t importing the model work in PBI desktop? It creates one monster table that is no use to anyone.
      3. Does Azure AS work? Specifically, can I access my on-prem data (all SQL Server), model it in Azure, create some pretty reports then publish them to the web?
      4. What are people doing generally? Importing an modelling in desktop? Using SSAS?

I’ve been creating tabular models for a while and using PBI since it was launched, I’m comfortable with the modelling / reporting, but I’ve not created any enterprise level stuff. I’m currently developing reports that will be accessed by many people in different locations and thought that SSAS was the correct way to approach this, so that multiple PBI desktop files can be created all using the same “single source of truth”.

If anyone can help I would be sooooo grateful!

      Thanks
      Alexis

?Have you configured a gateway ? Since your SSAS cube is on premise, once your PBI model is published to the cloud, it needs a gateway to see your on-premise SSAS cube.

      Hello Alexis,

I do believe Alain is correct in saying that you need to setup a gateway.

The way the Power BI web service work is your report get uploaded to the internet, so any local connections will not work (this is true for all data sources that are not URL based).

If you are using any on-premises connections you need to setup a gateway in order for the Power BI web service to make a connection to refresh your data.

?Maybe check that the User ID and Password is filled in? I know when I deploy On Premises, it removes them…

      Thanks for your responses everyone.

Forgot to mention in the original post, but I do have a gateway set up. It’s running and is connected successfully to the data source. The gateway itself definitely works because I’ve got other sources refreshing on a schedule successfully.

I have tried changing the gateway account to run as me, rather than NT SERVICEPBIEgwService. I am an admin on the server the gateway is running on. Don’t know if that’s the correct thing to do?

When we looked into it a bit further, the error logs suggested that the username is not being passed through. Has anyone experienced and overcome that issue?

Is it anything to do with the fact that I’m using a developer edition, not standard or higher?

      Thanks again.
      Alexis

Hi Jim, where are they removed from? How did you solve the issue?
