Can the YE update for PR be installed before the last 2017 pay run?  The checklists from GP says to “complete all 2017 pay runs” and then (several steps later) “install the U.S. year-end update”.  It would help us to do it a little early if possible.

      Thanks!

?You can install it any time prior to the close. Just make sure you account for any ISV solutions to make sure they are compatible.

Yes, you can install it anytime (We did ours last weekend in fact), but be sure to not install any 2018 Payroll tax updates until after you finish any 2017 pay runs and create the W2 Year End Wage File (The 2017 Year End Update basically contains the data and form updates for the Year End Wage File, the Payroll tax updates contain the tax rate table changes). It’s easy to get Year End and Payroll Tax Updates confused, but they are two separate updates.

The basic steps are usually… (simplified, but follow the checklist in the YE update documentation).

Backup (Company and Dynamics Control Databases)
Install 2017 YE Update (Be sure that you have a 2017 Payroll Tax Update installed)
      Update Clients
      Backup
Keep going until after the last payrun of 2017.
      Backup
Create Year End Wage File (generates W2’s, etc).
      Check the Data
      Backup
Install 2018 Payroll Tax update file
      Backup

The key is to be sure you have done all of your 2017 Payroll and created the Year End Wage File before loading a 2018 Payroll Tax update, or last 2017 pay will be calculated at the wrong rate, and you’ll need to be making a lot of corrections, etc…
