After learning about the GP Startup folder shortcut in Shawn’s awesome GP Life Hacks session at Summit last week, I was excited to get back and add a few windows to my Startup shortcut folder. So I did, and it didn’t work. I emailed our partner, and they weren’t aware of any issues so they went to Microsoft who apparently told them the Startup folder function is broken in GP 2018 & R2. Is this true? Can anyone confirm or deny this feature really broken for everyone on 2018R2?

I have a test install of 2018R2 (18.00.0628), the Startup folder still works in that client. Maybe it was the Year-End Update? What is your exact version?

I have used several GP2018 R2 versions and the startup folder works in all of them.
If you right click on the folder and add an item first that way, then it will allow you to add by dragging. It is a little temperamental if you just try to drag under the folder first.

      Have a great day!

      Hi

Just to confirm, you are sure you added the window to the Startup?Ā  You are certain you have security to the Window?Ā  You are receiving NO error messages? If so, what do they say?Ā  Ā Is the window an inquiry window or other window that may take a long time to open, depending on the amount of data you have?Ā  Does GP Lockup while it’s not opening?

Have you tried looking at the GP Process Monitor in the Microsoft Dynamics window to see if GP is “trying” to open it an failing?

      Let us know on these.?

      Hey, again

As I’m “playing” with this functionality on my own machine I note that there are several “versions” or names of windows, like “create PO” that one of which does not function right and the other does function correctly.

Additionally, I’m not sure I’m a fan of “auto” opening windows.Ā  Seems like a bit much if GP is trying to process multiple connections (depending on ISV’s etc).Ā  If GP already takes a second to load, adding these “auto” shortcuts may not be the best idea.Ā  Just my two cents worth, and in the immortal words of my favorite IT Mentors…. Just because you can does not mean you should.

My opinions aside, try adding a DIFFERENT window to open, or perhaps a webpage and see if you get any errors.

You may also have a corrupted record in the table for the shortcuts, the DYNAMICS..SY01990, you may be able to delete it there and try re-adding it.?

      Hi ,

I had a few windows in the Startup folder, and have security access to them. Mainly I wanted to have the Master Posting window there as that’s the first thing I typically do when I log in each day. No error messages show up, and my Process Monitor is empty. At your suggestion, I added a webpage to the Startup folder and that didn’t work either. Our partner reviewed the SY01990 table and found no issues.?
Thanks for the many suggestions, it is much appreciated! We’ll keep plugging away here and see if we can get a straight answer from Microsoft on the issue. šŸ™‚

      Hey

That is intriguing.Ā  Just out of curiosity, how do you open GP?Ā  Is it a deployed application or are you running it on an RDP or a local installation??

      Hey

Just to be clear, are you clicking a little Computer Icon and opening up a full RDP session or are you clicking a GP Logo that then opens up on your computer, but not in full RDP mode?

If it is the Icon, I suspect that is some of the issue, if it is full RDP then the mystery deepens!?

      Hi ,
We access it via the icon (the RDP window that appears is attached to this reply). Once we are logged into RDP, we then log into GP via that terminal server.

      Hey

Then, the mystery deepens!Ā  I can’t see a reason it would be failing at all from here.Ā  Ā But, after you hear from Microsoft would you post their fix/reason on this thread for us??

      Hey
      My questions would be:
      1. What did you add to the folder?
      2. What is/isn’t it doing?
      3.Ā  Any error messages?

I’ve seen issues where SmarLlist favorites were added to shortcuts and then ?something in the favorite changed/was no longer valid and GP just wouldn’t open at all.
Maybe let us know these answers and we’ll see if that triggers any different ideas.
      Thanks

Just tested in my 2018R2 install and got the same results as you.Ā  I updated my role because sometimes that will reset things in the home page and trigger things that we’re previously working correctly – but no luck on that front either.

I’m going to install the latest release and see what happens.Ā
      Thanks

I installed the Oct 7 update and the startup folder isn’t working for me in that version either.
Since has some working, I’m wondering if it is items added to the startup folder for new installs vs items that were in the startup folder from a prior install.Ā  ??New installs hit the bug that MS knows about but upgraded installs still work?

Maybe Abra and I can find time to connect and compare tables to see if we find a difference.
Won’t happen this week for me, but I’ll update the ticket if we can get connected.
      Thanks

One other thing I thought I’d mention is that if you are using the sample company (Fabrikam, Inc.) and have the message that comes up when you start the company that warns you that it is setting the date to 04/12/2027, the screens won’t open.

So in order for it to work in my sample companies, I had to add the line SAMPLEDATEMSG=FALSE to my dex.ini file.

I wonder if you have something else that is kicking off when the company is starting that is blocking the windows from opening, similar to the sample date message.

So – you could add that line to your dex.ini (it usually resides in the GP2018/Data folder) – and see if that helps.

But then you could see if there is something else that is opening upon startup that supersedes your other windows from opening.

If you drag those same shortcuts out of the start folder, do they work?

      Have a Great Day!

I added the line to the dex.ini as Abra suggested and the StartUp items functioned as expected.Ā  But it made me wonder about the HR To Do list that can be set to auto-open.Ā  I wondered if that could be conflicting with the StartUp items.Ā  So I turned on those To Do lists and when I opened GP, the StartUp items opened but the To Do lists don’t.Ā  There must be some odd order that things are firing in.

      Hi &

I checked our dex.ini and we already had the ??SAMPLEDATEMSG=FALSE line in there.
If I move the shortcuts out of the Startup folder, they work fine upon clicking them.
I have all To-Do tasks turned off.
We do have Rockton toolbox which I believe auto-starts when GP launches. We also have ‘branches’ in GP which seems to do something when GP starts as well.
I really do appreciate your doggedness in trying to solve this mystery! Hoping for a lucky break, but I fear we are running out of things to try.Ā
      Thanks,

You may want to try removing your third party products from your set file and try adding them back one at a time to see if they may be causing the issue.

      Hey Joe,

I am the lead developer at Rockton responsible for our Dynamics GP Toolbox product. It does auto start at the startup, just as most Dexterity applications do. Our product differs a little bit, however, in that we pop open that Safe Login modal dialog during the startup. But I have not heard of any issues with that particular functionality inhibiting the Startup folder in GP. You can test this by temporarily turning off that tool on the Dynamics GP Toolbox System Settings window. Then log out and back in again to see if your startup items will open.Ā

Let us know what you find out.

      Hi all,
Our partner and Rockton worked together to identify the underlying issue is indeed the Rockton Auditor program. Their technical team tested and determined that Auditor is verifying everything is loaded and initialized before allowing GP windows to be opened, therefore preventing anything from auto-loading. They were willing to add this issue to their enhancement list and potentially rewrite some of their code to call the startup folder after Auditor has done it’s thing, but no promises at this point.
Thank you all for your input on this issue and I’m happy we were able to pinpoint the issue and maybe even get a resolution sometime down the road.??????
