#HRandPayroll

We are a small to mid-size water & sewer utility in central SC with 30-40 employees.  Half of employees report daily to the main office, and the other half report to the “shop” which is located about a mile down the road.  So we’re a relatively centralized workforce.  Although there are two separate worksite locations.  We’ve been on GP since 2012 – currently on version 18.4 and process bi-weekly payroll in-house using GP’s HR & Payroll module. 

Our organization is at a size where we have some manual, paper-based processes that are still basically manageable (although somewhat cumbersome and annoying), and employees are comfortable with these long-standing processes, but as you’ll probably notice below, these processes feel antiquated and probably need a refresh.We (in the Finance Department) have some processes that we think can probably be modernized on the payroll/HR side of things.  For example:

1. We still issue paper paystubs as part of our bi-weekly payroll process.  My understanding is that we can setup email delivery of those paystubs through GP itself, so we might test that in the interim, but while we’re trying to make additional improvements in tour payroll & HR process it seems like electronic delivery of paystubs is something that a third-party product will also be able to handle.

2. We don’t have an online employee “portal” where employees can go to find important company-wide announcements, benefits documents, submit time off, document the completion of onboarding & training processes, etc. at their leisure from any device connected to the internet.

3. We use a paper-based leave request & approval process and pass around paper-based time sheets at the end of each pay period for employee signatures.

My main question is: Have any of you transitioned from processing payroll in-house using the GP payroll module (I don’t think we’re fully using the HR module functionality in GP) to using Greenshades  and/or BambooHR?  These are the two main platforms we are considering before we make a decision about if & how to make that sort of transition.  

Are there any “pro tips” you learned in your transition that would be helpful for us to consider before we make that leap?  Has the transition been a worthwhile endeavor in your opinion?  We’re a small staff, so it is difficult to commit a bunch of resources to an implementation like this and still keep up on daily/weekly/monthly work in our department.

  With Greenshades, you also have the option of staying with GP Payroll and just use the Greenshades Self-Service portal.   Greenshades has two options, one is a full payroll solution, the other ties into GP Payroll.

We still process payroll within Dynamics.  We are planning on add Integrity Data email suite for earning statement and W-2 distribution via email.
We implemented BambooHR last year and love the time off request system – no more paper!
With the app, employees can also see benefits, complete some onboarding documents, see announcements, etc. 
We’re fans of BambooHR!
