Are there any other companies out there who use Dynamics GP that do NOT use the General Ledger in the system?

I know, this is an accounting software, why NOT use the GL?  I’m just curious to know if there are other companies not using the GL in the system.

We’ve been using Dynamics GP since 2001 – my employer did not want to use the GL in the system so it would be safe to say that our GL accounts are not set up properly.  Out of curiosity, how much trouble would it be after 16 years to correct any account listings in the event that my employer wants to start using the GL?  Would we have to set up a new company and import info from the current companydB?

My employer is NOT considering it but it is always in the back of my mind – sort of, can we be proactive about this?

      thank you,
      Pam

Visiting with hundreds of clients over the past several years I have seen it only once.   They were using GP to pay bills and print checks.   I don’t remember the other accounting system they used but they said they had been using it for years and didn’t want to switch their GL over.
It is a complete waste of money in my opinion you can accomplish the same thing with other tools.  But hey who am I to judge.  They inherited GP from an acquisition so they used it!
If you are going to start using the GL it’s best to start fresh.  Loading 16 years of history or however much you have from another system is just not pretty.  It’s best to load the beginning balances for the current year and the journal entries for the current year into the system but going back several years is a huge project.

I’ve seen it once. A client owned a one user license of GP to track commissions on insurance product sales and print statements for each salesperson that were like invoices not the commissions functionality.

Their ERP was something like peoplesoft, a massive product that I couldn’t believe wouldn’t do what they needed in one application!

Depending on what you’re using it for, I’d consider re-implementation as I’d want subledgers you are using to be in sync with open GL balances you “start” with if you decide to go there.

      Thanks for the feedback everyone.

We are nowhere near the concept of introducing the GL into our “methodology” but I was curious.  I do not know what my employer uses other than he has an accountant offsite he works closely with.

We do use several modules in GP:  A/R, A/P, PURCHASING, SALES, INVENTORY, FIELD SERVICE (RMA), BANK RECONCILIATION

I believe it all comes down to is “can the system be trusted”.

Have a good rest of the week/weekend.
