Implementing Inventory
Posted by Mary Mallazzo on April 27, 2017 at 2:16 pm-
Hello
We are looking into implementing Inventory. Currently we are running GP2015 with Wennsoft/Key2Acct bolt on.
We realize that this will be no small feat. Looking for suggestion from GP users who have inventory up and running.
We are a subcontracting business, most of the material ordered/received is designated for jobs, what we really need to get a handle on is the material ordered for “stock”. Â
Wondering if companies have had “inventory/warehouse” consultants come in and review processes?
Do you use internal barcodes?Suggestions/past night mares would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Mary,I don’t have any experience with Wennsoft/Key2Act but I do have 5+ years with inventory in GP.
My suggestion is to: plan, plan, and plan again. Make sure your data is right. Test in a test company or development environment if you can.
Things that sound simple will jump out and bite you: Unit of measure is a big one. Get your data right the first time and you will save many headaches.Â
As far as consultants, normally your GP partner will come in and help you with some of the set up and tell you some of the common “defined” processes, often aren’t as helpful with customizing those processes to your needs.Â
We use barcodes a lot, and it is extremely helpful if you can utilize them to create transactions and reduce manual inputs that can be incorrect.

I would definitely recommend implementing a bar-coding system with scanners that integrates with both GP and Wennsoft.  I would also activate multi-bin in GP so that you can use bins to track items for each job. Multi-bin also makes cycle counts easier and gives you the location your your items in stock. You will also need a bar-code printer so you can print your own bar-codes and put them on items as needed.——————————

Hello
I have worked a lot with inventory and am familiar with Key2Act/wennsoft and having Key2Act really doesn’t change what you implement in inventory.
My a consultant my biggest struggle was having the end user understand Units Of Measure I am not sure if you will be running into that or will be buying stuff by the case or box with multiple  items but units of measure always seem to confuse everyone.
so lets say you can buy widget in 6 packs, 12 packs and 36 packs and a widget cost $1 each.
What always happens is when receiving receives the item they will record 1 EACH received for $36 instead of 1 36-case for $36.
So now inventory thinks you have 1 widget that cost $36 instead of 36 widgets that cost $1.
Drill Units of Measures into them , make sure everyone understands UofM’sÂ
