I have found out our numbering system has gotten off. How can I go about changing the fixed asset number to the correct number? Our Asset Tags don’t match what is in the system.

      Thank you.

      Hi Tammy,

You can use the Fixed Asset Modifier tool in the Professional Services Tools Library (PSTL) to change an existing Asset ID to a new Asset ID and make changes to the appropriate tables in Fixed Assets in Microsoft Dynamics GP.

As always, please make sure you have a backup or simulate this first in a test company.

      Hi Tammy,

Just to clarify, you mean the Asset ID, correct? If that is the case Ryan has a great suggestion. The PSTL tool is an extra install if you don’t have it installed already and it’s a set of different utilities, one of which is FA renumbering. If you don’t see it installed in your environment (and it might not be installed on every GP workstation potentially), you may need to reach out to your partner or a consultant for assistance as the download used to be “partner only” for this particular set of tools. I honestly can’t remember if it’s on customersource now too or not.

The other thing I wanted to mention is there is a field in Fixed Assets called Asset Label. When you say Asset Tag, what comes to mind is something like a physical tag on things like computer equipment, is that what you mean?Ā  My recommendation to clients was always to not attempt to use the Asset ID to label the physical device but use the Asset Label field instead. There are pros and cons to this suggestion obviously but for me the biggest “pro” is whoever is labelling assets physically isn’t limited to the naming convention that Finance uses to create assets in GP (and vice versa, depending on your process, Finance might have a different naming convention that wouldn’t work for say an IT department in computer labelling). Labels can change, which makes the Asset Label field a better choice to track this.

      Food for thought!

Thank you for your help. I am talking about the Asset Id, but like your reasoning on the Asset Label. I think I will leave the Asset Id alone and make sure the Asset Label Number matches what is put on the equipment.

      Thanks again!
