Before 2018, I was able to manage GP accounts including deleting active with my GP account and not sa with the tips in this mink: Create GP Users without using ‘sa’

However now it seems I can not delete user activity with my personal account, I must use sa instead.  Did something change with GP 2018 with user security?

Hi Carl,

Nothing there has changed and I just tested myself, with a non-sa sysadmin-in-SQL GP login and there was no issue removing someone from User Activity.

The only thing I would clarify that you check – in the off-chance that there’s a misunderstanding – is to make sure it’s your GP login in SQL that has the sysadmin server role, not your Active Directory domain user.

If you believe that’s correct, perhaps post screen shots here of the SQL user on the Server Roles setting and the same user in User Setup in GP and maybe we can see something from that that might explain the issue.

You said that you are a sysadmin in SQL so assuming that you still have the same rights in GP, there’s shouldn’t be a normal reason that you can’t delete users. 

I’ve seen some cases with user corruption (generally, not specific to 2018 R2). GP is essentially just passing the delete request to SQL, but sometimes odd things happen. Try creating a test user and deleting it. If that works, it’s an issue with specific user accounts, not your security in general. You can also try deleting directly from SQL as a test.

Please see attached screenshots.  I have the server role sysadmin, but my user activity window does not have the delete button.
I would assume GP is looking for something when generating that window to determine if I can delete user’s Activity or not.

I can modify users in the user setup, add and create users, assign security.  So it seems just can’t delete activity?

My Security roles in GP include PowerUser, so I think I am good on that front.

Hi Carl,

The Activity window looks normal to me. The delete button is beside the OK button, and doesn’t appear to be disabled (visually). Are you saying once you click on a user name in the activity list, that Delete button disappears?

I just changed my settings to use the ribbon after for a long time using the old screens.  Figured I should not send screenshots that don’t match my users 🙂
The Ribbon screen moved Delete to the ribbon and I was looking for the button on the bottom of the screen.
