Extending the life of GP

Hi everyone, I’ve been wondering how others are approaching the challenge of extending the life of their GP ERP systems, since end of life was announced. With technology changing fast, how are you managing to keep these systems up to date and running smoothly without a full system overhaul? Any tips or strategies you’ve found useful?

    Trevor,

Here’s the approach I have taken: Stay the course!

GP remains a mission-critical application for us. And it’s very inexpensive and easy to maintain (as long as you don’t let Microsoft’s announcements erode the attitudes and actions critical to the effectiveness of the application).

As soon as you and your organization start to neglect it, it will deteriorate and quickly become a burden to maintain.

Let GP continue to be your trusted and stable ERP. Go ahead and deploy all the hot new technologies ‘around’ GP. There remain a lot of options for integrating with and enhancing GP (while you’re preparing for replacing it). Of course, you’ll want to watch your ROI on any investments as the window of return is shrinking.

    I hope this helps.

      Chris,

That’s a solid approach, and we see a lot of field service companies doing the same—keeping GP at the core while adding the right tools around it to stay efficient. A full replacement isn’t always practical, but integrating purpose-built solutions can help extend GP’s life and keep operations running smoothly.

We’ve helped field service teams bridge that gap without major disruptions. Curious—have you found any specific integrations that have made the biggest impact for your team?

Can’t really focus on one app. But I sure love my SmartConnect by eOne. Single, strong, reliable, versatile, centralized tool for all of my custom integrations with GP.

I would make sure you keep on the latest supported SQL Version/Windows Server version especially as we get closer to the end of support date for GP. This will help since those will be supported longer than GP. If you are using Payroll for GP, that will see the first issues since the new tax tables won’t be provided. Also, you’ll want to keep current with the other Microsoft tools so that you will be on the newest supported versions that still work with the last version of GP.
