We had an issue where our SQL logs were growing at an incredible rate and causing timeout issues in our log shipping job.. It was discovered to be caused by a large number entries being made into the SY07140 table in a short period of time.  All of the entries were being made by the same user.  This user had almost 32,000 entries in the table. Entries for other users ranged 8 to 52 entries.

This happened early this morning, the user was not working at the time, but had remained logged into GP overnight since yesterday.

The SY07140 table, whose technical name is syAreaPageSections and display name is Area Page Section Layout,  contains the configuration settings for users are pages.

Has anyone had any issues similar to this?

If you delete all the records in the table for the user in question, the default records for that user will be created on next login. If you remove all records, they will be recreated automatically.

BUT… before you delete…. Please look to see if there is repeated entries… with the same CmdParentDictID, CmdParentFormID, CmdParentCmdID, CmdDictID, CmdFormID and CmdID. The only difference being the CmdSequence will keep incrementing.

Note the value of the CmdDictID field. You will probably find that there is a third party product with this Dictionary or Product ID that is creating new entries in this table every login.

All the menu and area page tables should grow to a fixed size and only increase when new companies, users or products are installed.

If any of these tables grow every time a user logs in, then there is a rogue product creating new entries without checking properly that it has already added its entries.

I have seen this lots with the SY07110 syMenuMstr table.  If these tables keep growing they will affect login performance.

Thank you for the response.
The users records were deleted, but prior to deleting them the entire table was copied. When drilling into the copied table I was able to identify the multiple entries. they are summarized below. As you can see, the values in the columns are the same with the only variance being the CmdID.

Based on my research so far it seems these Id’s reference GP HR Payroll and not a 3rd party app.  Although, we do use both Mekorma and Greenshades which are associated with payroll. The user is the payroll manager

Not sure where to go next with this.  If you have any thoughts let me know.

Hi Brian

Do the CmdID values repeat?

If so, I would say that this is a bug in GP.  Are you on the latest service pack for your version?  I would be surprised if it has not already been fixed.

Hi David,
The last update was the one released at YE 2016.

The cmdID was repeated up to 5000 plus times.  The final column of the  summary in the earlier post contained a count of the entries.

I have been monitoring this, and there have been no other occurrences of this issue since last week.

If the issue comes back and duplicates are getting created again, I would log this as a bug with Microsoft as it does not involve any third party products.
