We are implementing Avalara for handling our sales tax calculations. The Avalara help files say you can map your tax codes in GP or in Avatax. My question to GPUG is 2-part. What are other users doing? Are you mapping in Avatax or GP? If you are mapping in GP where do you put the tax code in GP? I followed the directions in the Avalara help files and where they say to put it does not exist in our version (18.3) of GP. Any guidance is appreciated.

Normally, in my clients that use AVATAX, they setup a tax code in GP AVATAX that points to the Avatax functionality and calls the appropriate taxes AS SETUP IN AVALARA.

To get the taxes to work you need to put the tax code AVATAX (or whatever you call it) in the TAXID field of the Customer, Vendor or Item that requires it.

This next piece is what trips everyone up.

Taxes, even AVALARA need ANOTHER field filled out in GP before they will work…..

The SHIPPING METHOD.

The Shipping Method tells the TAX ID field where the taxes are taking place.  As such in the Shipping Method setup there is only ONE field that is of value…

Whether it is DELIVERY or PICKUP.

Why?  Because if you are shipping TO a Customer, then taxes happen at the Customer Address you are sending it to, if it is marked PICKUP then it will tax at YOUR location on the transaction.

Conversely if it is a tax on purchases, DELIVERY taxes at YOUR location and PICKUP taxes at the Vendors location.

Therefore, if the SHIPPING METHOD along with the TAX ID are not setup on the Vendor/Customer/Item the taxes will not work.
