Does anyone have a Data Management ‘project’ template that includes all the entities needed to create a new product and associated released products in D365?Ā  The templates that arrive out of the box from Microsoft all seem to be configuration tables, not master data tables.Ā  When we create a new product, there are many tables that need to be input, just to name a few: Product, Product name and description translations, Physical dimensions, Unit of measure conversions, Released Products, Default order settings (inventory, sales, purchasing), GTINs, Approved vendors, external item for vendors and for customers, notes/attachments to the released products.Ā  Ā In AX we had developed custom menu items that our business users could access to import each of these things from an Excel file.Ā  Ā As we move to D365 I am hoping we can have a Data Management project template that includes all these steps in the correct sequencing, and the users would just need to attach the input files to each step and submit the whole data project.Ā  Has anyone done this and be willing to share their learnings?

There is a data entity called ‘Released product creation v2’ that we are using for importing new released products.Ā  This definitely does not have all of the associated fields you are talking about, but you could import those after the product is created.Ā  If you create the data project, you can start with this one and run in sequence with additional entities – you should be able to do this within one project.Ā  I haven’t checked everything you are mentioning above and the way I identify entities generally is just open in Excel from the screen you are importing into (it doesn’t always work, like for this creation entity, but usually gives you a place to work with).

You could probably also have a developer update the data entity that is there – or create a new one – but the level of effort might be fairly extensive.

      Hi,

We used the following import project in data management for what you are trying to achieve. We created the corresponding CSV files for each of the entities and loaded them to the Data Management project and ran it as a Batch job. If you are also creating the products using the import project, one thing to keep in mind to change the sequence number creation to Manual. Once the products are created, grab the last product number created and update the sequence number with that number +1 and switch it back to automatic. Another point to keep in mind is that, there should be no product creation activity in the system when this is happening. Else, the numbering will be out of whack that will cause more issues.Ā

      Hope this helps.

Thank you, Nagasatya!Ā  This is just the type of thing I’ve been looking for.Ā  This will definitely jumpstart finding all the right Entities, and th sequencing.Ā  This also gives me confidence that others have done this successfully before I dive in!Ā  All our products are manually numbered, so we won’t have an issue with that.Ā  But thank you for including this additional cautionary information.
