      Hello Fellow Members,

Have any of you used the MS Test Manager to manage testing along with TFS for code version control.

What would you say about Pros and Cons of the tool?

      Thanks!
      Vibha

Here what i feel about Test Management tool.

      Pros
      1) Test Cases can be traced to User Stories (Requirements) which can be traced to Tasks.
      2) Bugs entered from a test run are detailed with each step .
      3) Tests can be recorded.
      4) When you run the tests through Test Manager, you get a nice little xml file with the testers system information.
      5) Shared Steps(Prerequisite steps) for multiple test cases.
      6) Organizing Testing Sessions using Suite

      Cons
      1) Automating Dynamics AX 2012 test cases is tricky.
      2) All the lab environments should have AX 2012 Client for running automated test cases.

      Hey there,

If you are using TFS and MTM, the experience of using both together is fantastic. They really do fit seamlessly together. Testers can raise issues automatically written from the recordings of their testing. It’s really quite impressive.

It all falls down with automation though, as the previous poster said. While individual tests can be automated, there is no way to tie the playback of several tests together. So MTM is useless as a regression tool unless you are willing to have a tester babysit the test all the way through. Also, for any particular automated test, if you want to have it automatically validate the output of anything, forget about it. It appears only a user can say ‘yes I have visually inspected that the test came up with the expected result. Further, it’s not possible to edit the automation behind one individual step of a test-case, it’s record the whole thing or nothing. It’s really basic.

There’s a bunch more in MTM for load-testing (the ‘Labs’), or testing across platforms, and it seems pretty slick but we never bother with that.

So in summary, we use it and like it for tracking all of our live human testing and bug-finding/fixing, and don’t bother with the automation, When we get to the number of customizations where we feel it necessary, we’re thinking about AXeptance for automated regression.

BTW, if anyone reading the above about automation feels I’m completely wrong, let me know. I’d love to know how to make automation in MTM work better, as it’s a pretty good tool otherwise.

      Hi Jamie, Vibha,

The company I work for (Inflectra) has recently updated itstest automation platform(called Rapise) to help fill this exact (!) gap:

      1. Rapise now has support for testing Dynamics AX 2012 R2. 2009 and also AX7/365 for Operations. It could already do generic Windows, web and mobile applications, but we added special libraries that recognize the Dynamics specific UI elements. You can learn more about testing Dynamics with Rapise on our website.
      2.  Rapise was also enhanced to integrate with MS TFS and MTM so that you can easily schedule and execute the automated Rapise regression tests using TFS. That is described in this handy guide – Using Rapise with Microsoft Team Services.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

      Regards
      Adam
