Subcontracting

I am looking for some help with our Subcontracting Process.Ā We cannot get the lead time for the subcontracting operation to calculate correctly.Ā
For example, we put in a production order for an itemĀ where operation 30 is to be sent out toĀ powder coating with a delivery date of 3/23/2017.Ā Ā Because we have capacity on our shop floor, it is scheduling operations 10 and 20 on 3/23/2017 and then expects it to be sent out that same day to powder coat and be back also that same day. Our lead time for powder coating isĀ 4 working days;Ā and weekends can not be included.Ā Ā What I need to happen is: Operation 10 and 20 occur on 3/16/2017, and it is sent to powder coat on 3/24 so it is back on 3/31 (lead time is 4 days and it skips the weekend).
I have tried a few things, like setting up a calendar for power coating resource with the weekends blocked off, but that didn’t work.

Ā I tried updating theĀ route to add transport timeĀ to account for the lead time but that does not take in consideration of the weekends.Ā Ā It did schedule operation 10 and 20 correctly, but did not work for the lead time as it counts the weekends. .

I have also watched a few webinars and have also received conflicting information regarding if I need to have the requirement type to vendor on the route. Looking for some feedback on this a well.ĀI appreciate any insight or help anyone can give me. Thank you in advance!

Hello Tracy,
In order to correctly set up subcontracting to schedule your resources correctly, you do need to have a route step that utilizes the vendor type resource. Ā In your example there would need to be an operation 30 that is the subcontracting operation which utilizes OS – Powdr resource and has a run time equivalent to 4 days. Ā Also, make sure that on the General tab for the operation, the route type is set to “Vendor”.
You would also want to make sure that the route group which is used for operation 30 has the working times selected for the processing time so that AX will utilize the calendar associated to the resource to schedule and will not take weekends into consideration.

Depending upon your setup in the Production Control Parameters on how the ledger posting occur for a production order you will want to make sure to set the cost categories on the vendor resource to not have any cost, since the cost should come from the subcontracted service item used on the BOM.By doing the setup above and including a vendor type resource in the route, when the Purchase order for the service is received, the production order for the part will be reported as finished (since it is the last step in the process) and the finished good will be put into inventory. Ā This can eliminate a step for most people.
Please let me know if you have any other questions on the setup or production.
Happy to help.

Thank you for your help!Ā Ā
I changed the run time to be 32 hours = 4 working days.
When my order was for 50 units, it took 50×32 hours and gave me a date in 2018. I tried playing around with the process qty as well, but that didn’t work. How can I get 4 working days for my entire order regardless of the qty on the production order?Thank you –

Hello Tracy,
What we did was use the SETUP Time instead ofĀ Run Time.

Dave’s option might be a good one, Setup time is not quantity specific, it’s fixed, so it doesn’t change based on the production order quantity. Run time is always per piece or per qty of pieces and will change based on the quantity being produced.

Dave’s option works if the quantity varies from production order to production order. Ā Use the setup time and make sure in the route group that setup time is set to use the Working Time, then it should schedule the same each time as setup time is not quantity specific.
