We are working on implementing picking lists for our material handlers to set up the production lines before we start a production order.

So my question is, Can you generate a Production Picking list when a production order is released? I know you can when it is started, but we need our material handlers to pull the materials and bring them to the production line before we Start the production order in ME? If you can’t, how do you work around this?

Tracy,
  Yes you can certainly do this, but you may find the process tedious and decide its worth your time to have a mod done to do this for you. 

Steps to do generate the picklist for a released order are either:

1. Go to the production order -> View Tab -> Picking List Journals. 
   1. On the Production Journal form select Picking List -> Create Lines (resist the urge to click “Create New”).
   2. On the Create Lines form, Set “Proposal” = remaining quantity and click OK.
   3. On the Production Journal Lines form that opens, select Print -> Picking list.  This should cause you to print the picking list you normally get at start of a production order.
2. Go to Production Control -> Journals -> Picking List.
   1. same as 1a.
   2. Enter your production order number, then same as 1b.
   3. Same as 1c. 

Also instead of step c to print production order by production order, you could use the option at Production Control -> Reports -> Production Papers -> Picking list and use the Select button to enter multiple production orders and print a whole pile at once.

To Andrew’s point, this is a reasonably straightforward mod to move the production picking list creation forward to the Release transaction.  The only question becomes do we delete the subsequent picking list journal, or leave it there for posting later on.

We are doing this process.  Colby Gallagher got it right in his response.  We are on AX2012 R3.
We create picking list, reserve items onto it and print in ESTIMATED and leave posting to after started.  As a matter of fact you cannot post until you are in STARTED status.

Hi Tracy,
Not out of the box but I have seen many partners and clients make a customization to at least print the picking list for physical picking. The creation of the picking list itself doesn’t happen until Start because that’s when inventory transactions can begin to occur against the Work order. Released is really just used as a signal that the order is ready for production. For example, as a planner I would release all of my orders then my Production team would filter on Released orders and know what they can start.

As a workaround, I have seen people use Master planning where you could use a separate warehouse for stocking components versus where Production will pick from so when the requirement for the components is generated based on the BOM of the production order, AX generates a planned transfer order to send the component inventory to the production warehouse from the stoking warehouse. Lean mfg has something similar also where you can configure AX so it must transfer kanbans to the production input warehouse/location so that they can be picked for a Lean process kanban.

Hi Tracy,

I would certainly explore BOM transaction reservation options to secure materials stock before production startup. However, the workaround updating production picking list before starting-up is a “net-zero startup”. Simple scenario might look like as follows:

Assuming production order is estimated, scheduled and released.

1) Start-up production with full quantity.

2) Start-up production with negative quantity.

3) Material handlers create a picking list journal for production, pick, and post. Remain status updates to Route consumption.

4) Start-up production. Report as finished. Make sure Automatic BOM consumption = Never.

You may auto-create picking list journal at step 1.
