It is always educational to learn from other organization’s experience…
I am curious if there are any users of Dynamics here who configured their ledger account string to have the main account NOT be the first segment (putting the main account as the first segment is the most typical setup)
for example, something like: Dimension1-Dimension2-Main Account-Dimension3
I would like to hear what business goal/requirement you achieved by putting a dimension first, and what are lesson learned from that configuration choice? Did it work well? any particular challenges you have encountered?

?At the City of Columbus, Ohio we have dimensions for business units (Department-Division) before the main account because most of our reporting needs requireĀ our info beĀ presented by Department-Division. Business units didn’t have to go first in the ledger account, but since we organize our data by this way it works well to have it at the front of the ledger account – especially when downloading data to Excel.Ā We also have an Object Class (high level summary of main accounts such as Personal Services and Materials and Supplies) before main account because we budget to that level rather than to the main account level.Ā I don’t know of any issues we’ve had in not putting main account first, but since this is the only way we’ve ever had our system configured I don’t have a way to compare the two structures.Ā
