Increased Storage Capacity usage since MSFT Changed Telemetry
Have any other organizations seen a significant increase in their storage capacity usage reported in the Power Platform admin center for their Dynamics Finance environments?
We completed our EA renewal in June 2024. During the process, Microsoft was unable to provide detailed clarification on the increased storage numbers reported through their updated telemetry, compared to PPAC notifications received prior to the telemetry changes in 2023. Ultimately, we agreed on a storage figure acceptable to both parties.
From 2020 through April 2023 (the first 30 months), system usage was approximately 400 GB. In the following 30 months (May 2023 through October 2025), usage increased by about 1,400 GB. (Important to note, I don’t think our usage actual increased by this number, rather MSFT changed the way they measure this value)
Microsoft attributed the increase to telemetry changes, but specific details on those changes were not provided.
We also confirmed that storage capacity calculations include indexed tables, which in many cases can quadruple the actual database size. While indexes are necessary for performance, they are system-managed and cannot be controlled by clients. This means reported storage usage includes system-required components rather than just actual data.
Let this question also serve as a PSA for DBA’s to keep an eye on their storage capacity!
