We are just starting our preliminary planning for our migration from AX 2012 R3 CU12 to D365 F&O.  We hope to be live by this time next year (depending on what all is added to the project, aside from a lift and shift).

I understand that we will no longer have direct access to the Production SQL database, but what about access to the lower environment databases such as UAT and TEST environments?  Will we still be able to directly query those using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio or other tools?  Or will it need to be a solution like BYOD, entities, data lakes and other terms I’ve heard but haven’t seen a demo of yet?

Hello,

You would be able to query UAT using SQL but it will be limited. You will have to request access via LCS to enter that VM. They will grant you access for a few days.
As far as test and develop environments, you can do all that you want but the caveat is that you have to need to host those environments in your azure subscription or locally on your own machines. Either way refreshing production to any of those requires some processing. 

Goes without saying that those will not be used for reporting purposes
