10 Tips for managing your own ERP Project! Please read!

After last last several years working with MS Gold partners with their client implementations, I have found that the prescribed way of implementing BC and F&SC is truly burdensome to all involved!

Many clients are trying, on their own, to stand up these complex platforms and in some cases winning!

I wanted to simply share what I have learned in over 25 years in this space and see if it is helpful.

Ten things to help your next implementation:

1) Know your business from more than your own perspective – Finance, operations, procurement and planning all have unique views of the same business topics – rarely are they aligned. Be collaborative!

2) Define your processes and align on what is critical for go live.

3) Think in workstreams. They don’t all start at the same time – Finance, Product Info, warehousing, then production and planning. Delayed starts will help for these workstreams!

4) Think about faster cycles. with 1 or 2 legal entities, basic finance can be configured and tested in 4-6 months

5) Historical data! No! Its like adding old chocolate to a cake! Think about data warehouses or data lakes and pull in historical data and tie new ERP data into this one view and model all data without infecting the new ERP platform!

6) Task management! Keep it simple! Kanban is an easy way to organize your workstreams and sprints! Think light weight like Smartsheet or similar open project tools. No one has time to pay for 40 hrs a week for complex Project management!

7) Use Monthly milestones and 2 build up sprints for each to show real progress! 2ea 2 week sprints then demo what you were successful at! Also really helps to focus the teams as well!

8) Good foundations! General Ledger! Make sure you use new modeling concepts for your Chart of Accounts and Financial dimensions. Share across your legal entities where possible!

9) Start to think of your products and services like you do when you buy products on Amazon! Product Masters, Variants and Attributes make it easy to find what your looking for. Imagine looking for that Blue Polo shirt across 120 versions and line by line! Yikes! Size, Color, Style makes sections easy!

10) Go LIVE! Plan mock cutovers and perfect the process and data imports! Also think about post go live support! Resources that can solve problems, beyond your teams knowledge! Hence UG!
