My book club book, How To Be An Assertive (non aggressive) Woman, in life, love and on the job, came Friday, a bit warn and tattered from 1976 but  I would like to think some Phenomenal Woman out there living the dream had it in her hands and has passed it on to me!

Read the acknowledgement, author’s notes, introduction and chapter one.  Got my FAN and did exercise one I am 5.9 M and 4.65 F – androgynous according to the book.  I am interested to see how many of us are androgynous versus dominate one way or another.  I am curious if we are more androgynous because of the time we live in.  Forty years later have we tipped the scales, moved to the center and become androgynous as women in business?  I am curious if the men also have moved toward the middle in the past forty years?

The 4 characteristics of an assertive women was my favorite portion of chapter one.
      1.  Free to state what she thinks, feels, and wants.
      2.  Communicates in honest, appropriate and direct ways.
      3.  Goes after what she wants in life. (not just work)
      4.  Acts in ways that make her respect herself.
No. 4 spoke to me, as she went on to say, to be truly assertive you must be in command of yourself.  That includes, but is not limited to procrastination, eating to much (or little), or perform any act that makes you lose resect for yourself.

I know there are area’s in my life that I work at, have good intentions about but do not have command over, my take away from chapter one is to gain control over those area’s in my life.

A final shout out to Technology at it’s finest, the author put forth a problem and asked how would you handle it?  One was about a friend that called every day at dinner time and would not get off the phone.  This just reminds me why I love technology, because forty years later it is a non-issue, between caller ID, texting, and call blocking – I don’t have to address this problem at all.
