We are going to implement NAV 2017 soon.Ā  Are there recommendations for training manuals for our staff?Ā
We currently have version 5; due to the big gap between that and 2017, we are treating the new setup more as a new implementation than as an upgrade.

There are some great webinar’s right here on NAVUG to help you along the way.

Microsoft CustomerSource also provides some good E-training and whitepapers.

We recorded all of our train the trainer sessions with our partner during the implementation and testing phase for a video library of training manuals with our 2015 re – implementation.

Start with a navigation training from your implementer.Ā  Most places I have implemented Nav we built our own SOP’s based on training from NavUG, our MS partners, & power users in house.

      Hi,
I second Lewis’s comment – hopefully someone will be at Nashville?

On Thursday I’m presenting how Gogo went from a heavily modified version of NAV2009 and a lightly modified NAV2016 and three of the pillars to our success – one of which was our Training strategy.

Check out PPM85 – Member Showcase: How We Changed Our Processes Back to Standard Dynamics NAV at Gogo if you have time.Ā 10/12, 3:45pm Room Ryman Studio DE.

If you’re not at conference, I’d be happy to duiscuss our approach with you post conference.

First please try your customer portal as they have very good useful information.
Second stay focus on what your are currently using NAV for, you need to keep working.
Third implement security, worry about Role Centers later on.
Last implement new features as needed so you don’t overwhelm the staff.
      Ā  Ā – Help Server is installed.
Ā  Ā – Web Client good option later on.
Ā  Ā – Full user versus Limited User (Assigning specific tables for write).
Ā  Ā – Role client (Profiles, Assign Role Center ID’s).
      Ā  Ā – Job queues (End-user sending reports).
      Ā  Ā – One Note
      Ā  Ā – Notes
Ā  Ā – Customize End-user (Fact Boxes, Pages, Columns, Ribbon, Chart, Navigation Page, This page, etc.
      Ā  Ā – Jet Report Express,Ā
      Ā  Ā – Workflow
Ā  Ā – Dimension – How its internally now storing data versus the classic way.
Ā  Ā – 3 Three-Tier connection (Create one or multiple services for users to connect) Load Balancing.
      Ā  Ā – Office 365
Ā  Ā – Copy to Excel sales lines, modify it and paste it back with new lines.
      Ā  Ā – Cues
      Ā  Ā – OCR
      Ā  Ā – CRM Connector
      Ā  Ā – Application Test Toolset
      Ā  Ā – New Developers Code Editor
?Ā  Ā – XML port does both Text & XML, since Dataport were removed.
Ā  Ā – Word Forms and Email Enhancements.
Ā  Ā – Report designing in Visual Studio now.
      Ā  Ā – Power BI
Ā  Ā –Ā Finance Enhancements with new tools.

Just the tip of the iceberg.Ā

      Good luck šŸ™‚

All comments so far have been amazing, and I agree with all of them.

My team just recently did an upgrade from NAV2009 Classic to NAV2016 and there are two areas that I feel made the user transition easier once go live happened:

      1. Involve users in the testing – By having my users test the functionality of NAV2016 that applied to their specific job role, or task they use NAV for frequently, it allowed the testing to be more accurate, and it taught the users how to navigate around the RTC.
      2. Use Your NAV Partner – By having our NAV Partner provide “Subject Matter Expert” training, it allowed us to provide an in depth professional training to key users. Those key users were then able to help train all other users with their roles.

      Alan,

The NAV 2013 documentation is still useful. I would recommend downloading all of the files under “User Guides.” While it is is true some thing have changed in 2017, the core information is still the same.

Like others, I would recommend involving users in the process in addition to giving them documentation. The last time we upgraded where I work, I held “scrum”-style meetings in the morning where we went over processes that were tested yesterday, what will be tested today, and what obstacles there are to moving forward. Even though these meetings lasted 10 minutes, it was useful to get several people together to work through the process. Often, someone had already seen a user interface quirk that someone else had a question about. And, basically every meeting highlighted something someone didn’t understand currently, but could teach to everyone else in their department later.Ā

As well, bringing people together to learn the processes can help everyone understand how what they do affects the next person in the next step.
