Pricing by Item Category
Posted by lillie@brewdrkombucha.com on November 30, 2020 at 1:10 pm-
Hello,
We are looking for better ways to manage our pricing. We currently have about 150 customer price groups that we manage that require fairly constant attention as we add new items fairly regularly. Does anyone know of a way we can price by item category? Our prices are based on item category (i.e. all 14oz 12pk cases would have the same price) but that price can vary by customer. We are on BC13.
Thank you!

I don’t know of a native way to accomplish what you’re wanting. But in #NAV2016??, we handle our mass pricing changes with configuration packages.
Sales Price (Table 7002) and Sales Line Discount (Table 7004) are the two tables we use to updated prices and discounts.
If you export what you have, it’s fairly easy to update and/or add pricing in bulk. Especially if you already have a list of the new items you’re creating.——————————

Lillie,
While not based on the Item Category code, you could use the Item Discount Group to base it by Item.Ā You can use this to apply a discount (% based) to a Customer, Customer Disc. Group, or Campaign based on the Item being sold.Ā This functionality has the Sales Line Discount table as the backbone, if you are familiar with that structure.
You are not setting a specific Unit Price, but rather a discount factor to be applied to the Sales Line.Ā You’ll want to check your setup to determine the visibility of the discounts in the GL for later reporting.
You could use a Config. Package to make a matching Item Discount Group to your existing Item Category Codes.Ā You may also want some logic where when the Item Category is set the system auto-populates the Item Discount Group or to at least gives a warning if there is a mismatch.
With all pricing structures you setup, be aware the system will always give the best available price to the customer.

Hi Lillie,
We’ve made a few customizations around this for different purposes (not exactly what you are asking for but similar) and it’s never been too significant in time.Ā If I remember correctly, newer versions of NAV and all versions of BC have events in them to allow you to replace the way the basic sales order line pricing is calculated.Ā
Pretty easy to deploy as an extension also and so far upgraded through to BC 17 at one customer with no real maintenance time investment between upgrades.
